Fifth Regiment Encampment Returns From St Simon

Soldiers of the Georgia Fifth Regiment spent hours in Brunswick after an encampment on St Simon Island. Two trains carried baggage to Atlanta and a second regiment arrives today from Macon and other towns with about 450 men under Colonel Harris.

Receiver Cravatt Takes Over Brigman Bros Bankrupt Case

Judge A J Cravatt returned from Waycross as receiver of Brigman Bros Nahunta naval stores firm now in bankruptcy. A state court receiver had been appointed but agreed to let the bankruptcy court handle the case, and Cravatt will wind up the firm’s affairs for Downing & Co the large creditor.

Judge Parker to Hear Glynn Superior Court Session

Judge Parker will preside in Glynn Superior Court for a chambers session on Monday. The motion docket along with demurrers and appeals will be heard as a new grand and petit jury is drawn for the December term. Attornies are expected to attend.

Regulations amended to include maple syrup made from imported materials

Washington July 24 reports the treasury department regulations for drawback on maple syrup manufactured entirely from imported maple sugar and granulated sugar have been amended by Assistant Secretary Reynolds to include syrup produced in part from those materials.

Atlanta July 24 A special committee of the House on constitutional amendments led by Mr. Persons of Monroe will report on whether the legislature may call a constitutional convention. The panel will not consider any amendment measures until the convention question is resolved, and a favorable recommendation on a call is anticipated. Two pending measures by Mr. Davis and Mr. Lewis are referred to this committee.

Train wreck halts line between Wilmington and Wilson

Traffic on the Wilmington and Weldon branch of the Atlantic Coast Line is tied up seventy two hours after twenty freight cars plunged into the Neuse river between Goldsboro and Dudley. The brake rigging failed on a car as the train crossed a bridge, one span gave way, and part of the train fell into the water about twenty feet below. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters answered an 11 PM alarm from box 45 at L and Albany, locating a blaze in a 2209 Wolf Street negro shanty. Authorities believe a intoxicated man started the fire with a knocked lamp after rough housing. He was locked up in city jail.

Washington July 24 Oil and hides will be put on the free list with a recommendation to reduce duties on harness boots and shoes. Iron ore remains in doubt while the conferees expect a compromise on a 5 to 25 cent per ton range. The lumber schedule is unsettled and Speaker Cannon indicated no completion before August with Democrats likely to reopen schedules for discussion and a rule cutting off debate facing difficulty.

Scotland Yard detectives have developed a clue to the July 2 robbery of James Goldschmit a diamond broker at Cafe Moneco in London. Pearls valued at 550000 dollars were stolen by American thieves who trailed Goldschmit from Paris. The kaiser containing the jewels was snatched from the cafe wash room as Goldschmit cleaned his hands.

Soldiers to encamp at St Simon through August 15

FF Liew reports soldiers will crowd St Simon until Sunday August 15. The Second battalion arrives next Sunday and moves on August 7, while Clarke Rifles of Athens voted Friday night to encamp from August 7 to 14. Other Third regiment companies may join.

General Passenger Agent W. H. Leahy of the A B A reported heavy summer business for his line. He noted more travelers to the sea shore than in any previous season and said a steady stream has sought the seashore since early June.

H. B. Fitts, white foreman of the stock house at the No. 4 blast iron furnace of Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad company, in Bessemer near Birmingham, was killed this afternoon when caught by a runaway elevator. He was horribly mangled and survived by a widow and several children.
