The Savannah rifle meeting August 25 to 30 draws Bruns wick teams and southern participants. The program lists DeRenne Trophy Team Match with $1000 prize, Regimental Interstate Team Match, Company Team Match, Rifle Novice, Cavalry Carbine, Carbine Novice, Visitors and Revolver matches with cash prizes.
The weekly weather summary reports favorable conditions in many areas but excessive rains damage crops in the Missouri valleys and Ohio valley. Drought eases in the south yet parts need rain from Oklahoma to the Carolinas. Cotton suffers in several regions while tobacco varies by state and curing advances in the Carolinas.
C. J. O'Farrell of Brunswick Electrical Supply Co reports from Atlanta that a complete new electric plant will be used locally. One engine has arrived and the other is due soon. He attributes recent poor service to a faulty high grade engine and promises improved, reliable service after adjustments.
Judge F Willis Dart newly appointed to Brunswick circuit superior court will hold his first court in the city tomorrow. Glynn superior court convenes to call the appearance docket hear motions and draw juries for the fall term while adjourning the lengthy May term now in session.
The event lists distance 200 and 30 yards with seven shots at each range and same day scoring. Any military rifle or carbine except Krag Jorgenson. no handicap allowed carbine. Entry fee 1909 dollars, three tickets for two dollars. Re-entries allowed. Medal Match No 2 uses 500 and 600 yards with seven shots per range under identical terms. Brunswick likely to enter at least two teams.
Bloomington Mississippi July 23 Captain Richmond Pearson Hobson engages to Miss Letlse Stevenson daughter of Former Vice President Stevenson. Wedding planned for this fall. Miss Stevenson is a leading social figure in the region with frequent visits to Washington. Parents issued the engagement notice.
Honolulu July 23 report says the territorial convention of the home rule republican party fractured as Prince Cupid and about forty delegates bolted to form a new nonpartisan party opposing Delegate Robert W. Wilcox. Wilcox and Rahlanukoala ni dismissed the split, while the belters rallied around Cupid and discussed options with the Democrats.
From Cowes and London July 23 reports say urgent orders push ahead coronation preparations as King’s health worsens and doctors fear relapse. A high court official notes speedy coronation driven by physicians believing the king may not recover.
Washington July 23 President’s order retiring General J H Smith over a Philippines duty may be invalid. Smith’s supporters argue the president can mitigate but not increase a court martial sentence. They compare to criminal justice limits and note possible federal court action over retirement pay. The president could retire an officer at age 62 without cause.
Persons with knowledge of a deed by J. J. Spears to the Brunswick and Seamen's Hospital conveying land for the unfinished brick hospital are asked to report to N. D. Russell, city council clerk, or F. J. Twitty, city attorney. The deed was executed but not recorded and is reported lost.
Eight Uranswiel excursionists who left for Atlanta Monday morning return home after a pleasant journey. The group described the trip as enjoyable and eventful.
C J Edwards southern representative of Cabie Piano Co was accidentally shot at the home of C L Edwards 141 Spring street. The 38 caliber pistol discharged as it was knocked from a bureau entering his abdomen and liver. He was taken to Elkin Cooper sanitarium for operation and remains in critical condition with slim hopes for recovery.
Captain Joseph Williamson, superintendent of convicts, escorted five men from the convict farm to the stockade yesterday. They were convicted at the last superior court session and sentenced to gang terms. The defendant Hassell, charged with shooting Captain Sprague, was not among the group and is expected to pay a $200 fine this week.
Frank Peker 71 years old shot himself in a front room at his Columbus Georgia home. His wife found him. he died within minutes. Native of Bohemia he had lived in the city since 1886. Father of C F and W J Peken August. A separate note reports August Green, a Black man, arrested for theft and bound over for trial after a preliminary hearing.
Paris witnesses severe rioting as police clash with crowds after Deputy Conti’s oration. A mob of over six hundred attacked officers, leaving many police wounded and several leaders fatally hurt before the disturbance was dispersed.
William Greenfield, who suffered severe injuries on the pile driver at Taylor's mill several days ago, is rapidly improving and is expected to be out again soon. His pain from the injuries was notable but he is recovering well.
Atlantic Coast Line crews in this city paint over Plant System markings on rolling stock and replace with ACL names. The work covers all lines of the former Plant System, with officials also receiving new insignia and uniforms to reflect the change.
The Brunswick Riflemen held an unusually interesting meeting in their armory last night. A large number of routine matters were transacted. The company is in flourishing condition and under its present officers is growing in numbers and interest.
Colonel Beverly W. Wrenn, formerly Passenger Traffic Manager for the Plant System, is expected to become General Passenger Agent of the Burlington Route. He would oversee passenger operations in a western division, with P. S. Eustis still directing overall system passenger business. Wrenn is renowned for his advertising ability and statewide Florida promotional work, and his move to the Burlington is viewed as highly likely.
New Orleans July 23 Lieutenant Foster in charge of the New Orleans branch of the United States hydro graphic office reports a gulf survey near the Mississippi mouth shows 25 fathoms of water versus 60 fathoms in the previous survey. Some blame West Indies earthquakes, others a Mississippi silt deposit. A government resurvey of the gulf will be ordered.
Indianapolis July 23. At a rousing meeting of the Indiana organization the members quickly raised another 50 000 for the benefit of the anthracite coal strikers. This is the second donation of 56 000 and leaders say further contributions are likely.
The regular city council meeting is scheduled for this evening at the usual hour. Citizens are advised to attend and observe the proceedings.
