Raym leaves Mobile agency amid changes as H. Brunswig’s time ends. Raymond's years as representative attract notice in steamboat circles. The transition includes questions about the successor and wage contrasts for local attractions and travel schedules.
Judge Reagen presided as Glynn County Superior Court recessed until July 28. Cases disposed include Pollard guilty for misdemeanor with sentence twelve months or 125 dollars and cost, Harmon guilty on larceny from house two months or 20 dollars, Cox, Curry, and Haseell outcomes, and Dent Hartley acquitted on simple larceny. Libel suit Williams vs Williams ruled for defendant. Bar association members praised the judge’s conduct.
Joseph Hassell the negro steward was arraigned for assault with intent to murder in Superior Court. The jury found him guilty of shooting at another not in his own defense, and Judge Reagen reduced the sentence to a misdemeanor with a $200 fine or twelve months on public works. Captain Sprague improves and may be released soon.
Special notice requires all bills against the British steam ship Fernfield to be presented at our office by noon today. failure to do so will result in payment being debarred. F. D. M. Strachan & Co, consigners.
Auditors for Atlantic Coast Line announced for Wilmington offices with headquarters in Wilmington. George S. LeGrand from Wilmington named auditor of passenger receipts R S Melver from Savannah auditor of freight receipts Spencer LeGrand from Wilmington auditor of freight receipts H H McKee from Savannah auditor of disbursements. They relocate from Savannah to Wilmington by August 1. Mr McIver, Brunswick native, has many friends in the city.
W H Dyer is replaced by S M Roberts as master mechanic of Atlantic Coast Line shops in Brunswick. Roberts arrives from Waycross to assume duties. Dyer departs for Waycross to begin new work. Many shop workers attend the departure. both men are well regarded locally.
Rev. James E. Dickey, recently elected president of Emory College, arrived for transition as Dr. C E Dowman departs after four years. Dowman’s tenure saw curriculum growth and a new building, while students praise his leadership. Dickey, longtime Oxford resident, will assume full charge soon.
St Simon melons, the largest of the season, are on sale at 227 Grant Street next to Owens' meat market in Brunswick. Come and get one for your Sunday dinner.
The May 1902 Brunswick Georgia grand jury reports county indebtedness at 64,000.09 bonds plus 2,817.00 Preston judgment, and 4,221.00 in sinking funds. They praise road and revenue work, note education funding shortfalls, and urge new courthouse, jail upgrades, and two primary schools to relieve crowded rooms in New Town and Old Town Brunswick. They commend the board of education but call for stronger funding and facility improvements.
The News force thanks the Mandolin Club for a delightful serenade last night. The group, one of the city’s best musical organizations, included M R Marks, Carl Baumgartner, Shields Kenan, Herbert Miller and others. They chartered a carry-all for the outing. The remains of Mrs. McWhorter were carried to St Mary’s for funeral services attended by many Brunswickians.
A car of stock bound for John Curry at St Simon caused chaos when four steers refused to board a ligater. One steer swam to a docked vessel and bellowed loudly until sailors and bystanders helped corral it back to the wharf. Police were asked to intervene to prevent further danger.
News from Warren New York reports busy riverfront with several vessels in port including tug Nepita schooners Laura and Madeline from New York. The steamer Gaging and the tug Stella are noted at the Marine railway and docks, while Five at the Lumber company dock receive cargo and rail activity continues as ships arrive and depart.
