Public notice outlines today’s morning program at 7 30 with Brunswick hosting nine Georgia veterans in a community event. The schedule is listed for July morning activities.
The annual reunion opens at Glynn county courthouse with officers elected and minutes read. Veterans, local ladies, and officials participate in sessions, a morning program proceeds smoothly, and a parade is planned for 8:30 AM with 432 veterans registered and more expected.
The Fifth Regiment departs Stasimons Island after camping there as a special feature. Atlanta's Own, led by Adjt. Gen. J. Van Holt Nash, prepares to move in coordination with A. B. and A. trains. Brigades and present site impressed observers.
Col Pomeroy led the Second Regiment’s heavy marching parade through Newcastle to the docks in Brunswick in appreciation of local courtesies during the encampment. Veterans watched as tents were struck and trains prepared, with plans discussed for future state brigade encampments and broader maneuvers on St Simons Island.
The Brunswick Oglethorpe hotel ballroom hosted a grand revision ball with Confederate veterans in dress uniforms and veterans’ groups in uniform. Dr W B Burroughs led the grand march with Miss Rambo as state sponsor, the Firth Regiment band from St Simon's provided music, and guests in full dress enjoyed a crowded, festive evening.
The reunion parade in TransWick starts 8 40 this morning to avoid heat. Veterans from the city march with Sons of Veterans sponsors maids and matrons. The route runs Union Street to Newcastle Street then north to the courthouse with Gov. John M Slaton and staff among spectators. An official parade order follows with no mounted officers.
A Brunswick meeting of Georgia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans and allied groups drew civic leaders, Daughters of the Confederacy and brigades from East West and South Georgia. Officers, sponsors and maids of honor were named as the group discussed plans and presented reports.
W. B. Lee known as Barney Lee, was lingering at his Monk Street home after a self inflicted revolver wound. Doctors warned death could come within hours as of midnight with his condition described as in danger of death.
Col Kingman recommends a 30-foot low water channel for Brunswick, enabling any current ocean freighter and boosting exports and coast trade. If L and N buys A B and A and makes Brunswick Atlantic outlet, region could see strong growth. Mallory line reportedly seeks three large passenger and freight ships for Brunswick trade as Panama Canal designation nears fruition.
