City council held a busy session with minutes from June, 28 and July 3 read and approved. Action included reversing a building permit rule and instructing the marshal to docket builders who start without council permission.
Informant informs Brunswick that Miss Mamie Judge, formerly of Brunswick, Georgia, died at Sibley a few days ago. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Judge and had many friends in Brunswick. No cause or further details of death are given.
Quitman Georgia July 10 A committee set the program for the Weekly Press Association convention. About 75 to 100 visitors arrive Monday afternoon with a reception at the courthouse square 8 to 11 pm. Tuesday opens at 9 am with welcome by Mayor Bennett followed by a basket dinner and a parade of regional resources. A reception at the Oglesby home and a watermelon cutting on the courthouse square cap the visit before Tybee dip and departure. Rail lines plan to carry 125 to 200 attendees from northern counties and Plant System service may raise totals.
The Baltimore News denies a report that moving telegraph lines from Western Union to Postal would end Western Union's contract with Baltimore and Ohio. It states Western Union and Ohio lines last for 35 years and argues most Washington New York wires use B and O routes, with few using Pennsylvania rails.
The Cambria coal mine explosion near Johnstown Pa occurs at one o clock. About 250 men were in mine No 6 when it blew. 10+ escaped. Rescue work hampered by smoke gas and fire. Officials report many killed or trapped miles underground. Relatives gather as rescuers prepare to enter with care.
Emmett Horine of Georgia, preparing for the Naval Academy, nearly drowned while swimming across Spa Creek in Annapolis. Exhausted at midstream, Horine was saved by Herbert French of Missouri who pulled him to safety until a shore boat arrived.
Large crowds of excursionists from Rome and Atlanta return to Cumberland and praise Manager Jacobi and his assistants. About 250 guests are on the island and well cared for, with locals urged to patronize the resort more in the future.
In Fitzgerald, Georgia on July 10 reports say Judge T. J. Holton exchanged words with T. F. Farmer over a baseball bet. Holton, Abbeville mayor, fired at Farmer after a chase into a saloon, striking him in the left shoulder. Farmer’s wound isn’t serious.
Brunswick and Birmingham officials launch a Sunday schedule to Savannah starting Sunday. Trains depart Brunswick at 7:00 a.m. and arrive in Savannah at 9:45 a.m. Passengers gain almost a full day in Savannah. For details contact city ticket agent B. J. Ford.
London reports King Edward's progress is favorable and he will be moved to the royal yacht early next week. Physicians remain in constant attendance as the king rests on a movable couch during recovery.
Col W M Toomer of Waycross was elected fourth vice president of the Georgia Bar Association in session at Warm Springs. The position honors his standing among Georgia lawyers and reflects the high regard of his professional peers.
In Rome on July 10 the Vatican barred Princess Joseph Rospigliosi, wife of an ancient Italian noble, from a nurse hired by her due to an invalidated marriage. The couple wed in 1901. she is the granddaughter of an American privateer commander and ex wife of Colonel Frederick Parkhurst of Bangor Maine. The case prompts expected developments and renewed church scrutiny.
Col. B M Blackburn famed Atlanta newspaper man is in the city for several days as the guest of friends. He represents the Atlanta Journal and will soon write an industrial story focusing on Brunswick’s commercial side.
Foreman Wright and a team from Southern Bell reached Brunswick from Atlanta and will stay for weeks to overhaul the local system. New cables will be installed and switch boards replaced with newer, more approved models to improve service for patrons.
To ease Sunday travel between Brunswick and Savannah the Southern Railway will operate two extra coaches on the Brunswick departure at 6:25 a m. These trains will go through to Savannah without change, ensuring a comfortable day trip for travelers bound for Savannah.
Governor Candler is collecting names from state ordinaries to appoint about 700 delegates from counties to the farmers convention in Macon. He will issue commissions as he completes the lists and finalizes five delegates per county.
The seven mast schooner Thomas W. Lawson was launched at Fall River yard witnessed by thousands. She measures 405 feet long 80 feet wide carries 8100 tons and 43000 square feet of sail. Steel hull engines reduce crew to about 16 and total cost is 2500000.
Circulars announced Chas L Smith as the Seaboard Air Line New England agent based in Boston. He replaces W W Tull who resigns to join Merchants and Miners Transporta tion Company in Atlanta. Smith, formerly a Seaboard traveling agent, is effective July 8 with New York headquarters.
J G Steffee of Ruskin reported in Waycross that rains ruined his ten acre broom corn field. Steffee, experimenting with broom corn culture in the south, planned a Ruskin broom factory later this year and will plant another crop.
The News learns from an authentic source that the Oglethorpe company Knights of Pythias will travel to San Francisco to meet four men who have agreed to go. The company will assemble tonight and take definite action.
