A private Washington telegram says the president may reopen the Smith appointment and investigate the case before Senate consideration. Former Brunswick Postmaster Brown, ousted amid irregularities, seeks reopening and possible reappointment with Representative Brantley present at the Post Office today.
Mayor Uel presided over a lively session with multiple rulings. Harry Waters, Bay street saloon cook, convicted of violating city ordinance against females in a saloon and fined 100 dollars. Several women fined a dollar each for loitering around the saloon. Other cases included fines for riding bicycles with no lights, leaving a horse untied, and disorderly conduct or begging, plus a discharge for loafing.
Richard and Pringle's genuine Georgia Minstrels performed at the Grand to a large season crowd. Upstairs nearly filled with colored patrons, downstairs nearly full with whites. The show featured new jokes catchy songs and dog dancing though some acts dragged.
The Valdosta Guano Company plant in Valdosta Georgia was largely destroyed by a fire that began in the acid chamber. The loss is estimated at 50,000 dollars with 30,099 dollars covered by insurance. Part of the facility was saved.
A Panama City report says calm returns after a naval battle yesterday between revolutionary forces led by General Herrera and government troops. Government losses include five killed. General Carlos Alban, Panama's military governor, was killed. Twenty-seven wounded reported among revolutionaries. The U.S. cruiser Philadelphia brokered a halt to further use of Lautaro.
In Washington on January 21 the Ways and Means Committee reopened Cuban reciprocity hearings focusing on proposed Cuban tobacco concessions. John R. Young, president of the National Leaf Tobacco Association, urged against concessions, warning they would saddle relief costs on two American industries and devastate U S tobacco and cigar sectors with widespread farm reductions across multiple states.
A nighttime blaze destroyed the Sylvania schoolhouse in Screven County, likely set by incendiaries. At the same hour a large plate glass window at L. H. Hilton’s store was smashed, and the W. J. Walker & Co. store at Thyre burned with about $1,500 insurance. The school had no insured coverage.
Special commissioner Franz Von Jessen sailed to Bremen to assess support for selling the Danish West Indies to the United States. He plans a Danish vote on the issue and says most island residents oppose changing rule.
Two murderers were executed at Mississippi City Mississippi at noon on January 21 both on the same scaffold. Lewis Johnson who killed City Marshal Richardson of Gulfport prayed aloud as the trap sprung while Victor Johnson who murdered a girl at Pass Christian appeared terrified and mute. In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania John Lutz was hanged for murdering his wife and struggled to stand as the noose was placed.
Governor Candler announced that Georgia teachers will be paid in full for last year's work, totaling 600000 dollars. Warrants prepared by State School Commissioner Glenn will be signed, with payments likely Friday or Monday. The funds come from the state treasury as disbursements begin after warrants are signed.
Strong attraction coming to Brunswick theatre Saturday matinee and night January 25. Where the Laugh Comes In is a big musical comedy with new songs and dances. It is praised by critics as a top comedy hit and promises a full house, though return dates are unlikely as it travels to the Pacific coast after Florida.
Jefferson City report states J. L. Craft a convict in the state penitentiary was hanged today for the murder of Henry Speaker a posse member who tried to arrest him after an escape. Kansas City report notes Albert Garth a colored man who killed Minnie Woods was hanged this morning.
A. C. Moon, a planter near Stayhorn, is shot Sunday afternoon by Sam Bowie, a negro planter and schoolteacher. Bowie surrendered but was killed by a mob as officers attempted to take him in. Moon lies critically wounded. mob identity and motive remain unclear.
Rear Admiral Schley and Mrs. Schley arrived in Washington after a ten day Savannah trip. The timing of filing the appeal from the court of inquiry recence decision is not yet set. Counsel Rayner and Teague have drafted the appeal and will arrive from Baltimore to submit it for the admiral's approval. Schley plans to leave for Chicago on Thursday.
St Paul reports a check for 1,000,000 dollars mailed by the Mutual Life Insurance Co of New York to the Peavy estate for the life of Frank H Peavy the late Minneapolis millionaire. The payment is described as the largest check ever drawn.
The Georgia railroad commission has not yet decided the B. and B. case two months after hearing. At a recent meeting the board referred the matter to chairman Judge Spencer Atkinson to investigate further and issue a decision, but no ruling has been issued so far.
Washington January 21 republican members of the ways and means committee decided to begin consideration of a bill to reduce war revenue taxes on beer and tea. A hearing is set for Monday the 27 to discuss the duty on tea and beer taxes with the aim of cutting the beer rate from 1.60 to 1.00 per barrel, a revenue loss of about 24.6 million dollars, and tea taxes dropping about 8 million.
W B Tait civil governor of the Philippine Islands arrived in San Francisco and is ill from climate and duties. He says the war is confined to Batangas and Samar and reports General Wheaton to Coing is doing splendid work. The natives of Batangas are hoped to be pacified by the end of March.
The council plans to keep the liquor license at 200 dollars, rejecting the license committee recommendation to raise it to 300. Several aldermen have opposed any increase, making the present rate effectively settled.
Manager Gosch of a sash door and blind factory says the business will start soon. The plant will produce high grade sash doors blinds mouldings from Georgia pine and Cyprus. The News believes the venture will succeed.
ST. LOUIS January 21 William H Hoffmeister former supreme recorder of the Legion of Honor killed himself with a revolver at the Planters hotel today in a suicide act authorities reported Hoffmeister lay in state already in public memory for his former position and recent activities gathered at the hotel described the scene as quiet with no other people harmed in the incident
Port authorities ordered all vessels not to sail as a storm brewed off the Atlantic coast. Storm signals were displayed along the river front per the weather bureau. Early this morning a very strong wind was reported.
New Orleans dispatch reports the steamer Drayton Grange sailed for Cape Town carrying 910 horses. The shipment reflects cargo priorities for the voyage and marks a notable livestock movement from the port.
Mrs. H. B. Holman of New York announced that her daughter Josephine asked William Marconi to release her from the engagement. Marconi complied and the marriage planned earlier is now off due to his work on wireless telegraphy.
Four condemned or charged inmates escaped the Jefferson county jail in Birmingham. Frank Duncan, under death sentence for murder, with Cincinnati connections, and three others George Bullard A J Dye and Jeff Van Horn, reportedly aided by sawed bars and a pried gate.
Albert T. Patrick is brought to trial in New York charged with the murder of millionaire recluse William Marsh Rice who died September 3, 1900. Patrick handled funeral arrangements and forged checks drawn on Rice’s accounts before his relatives were notified.
The Caf frey Central Sugar Refining Company and the Franklin and Abbeville Railroad Company were placed in receivership today in federal court. Bondholder Alfred Hennen Morris filed suit. About 160000 dollars is tied to the refinery and a similar amount to the railroad, which mainly hauls cane. A. G. Brice named the receiver.
