At the January 9 1902 Brunswick council meeting officers for 1902 were elected including City Physician Dr J A Butts City Marshal S A Burney Chief of Police John C Green and Fire Chief John C Green The Brunswick News was designated as official organ and several committee appointments and salary actions were set followed by adjournment.
Will Bartlett, recently cleared of a misdemeanor in Columbus city court, fled the second story prisoners room after leaping from a 30 foot window. He survived with no serious injuries and vanished before officers could recapture him. Bartlett had previously broken a leg and has since limped.
A Greenville man identified as B W Hughes was accused today of attempting to assault two white schoolchildren in the Reidsville area and then Mrs. E M Fowler at her home. Fowler's son pursued and challenged him. Hughes was wounded by a pistol shot but detained in lockup awaiting transfer to Spartanburg. The incident caused local excitement but no disorder. Esther Goodyear returns from Albany visit.
Franklin J. Moses ex governor of South Carolina faced Boston Municipal Court on a charge of passing a $50 check for an overcoat drawn on a SC bank with no funds. He claimed belief in funds and described morphine and opium addiction leading to the act, and he was sentenced to four months at Deer Island.
Charles Edward Gross Stewart of McDonald and Helen Fleurine Burns of Willacoochee were married at Willacoochee by Rev. M C Austin. Eight attendants included Sadie Dart and May Farmer with their partners. The couple left for an extended wedding tour and will attend the Charleston exposition.
The News becomes the only paper in Brunswick and advertising contracts are not yet arranged. Many Times-Call subscribers will miss today's issue but arrangements will be completed within 24 hours. Miss Louise Thompson, a local favorite, will leave Monday for Savannah.
A fire at the Rickey ite Non-explosive Powder Company's mill in Clearfield Pennsylvania killed two men John C Stewart and Roy Smith with a third dying from injuries. Four others escaped with severe burns as they ran to the nearby river to extinguish flames. The mill owned by James Kerr and W H Rickey cost about 40000 and was built eight months ago.
The North Georgia National Bank opens in Blue Ridge with paid up capital of 40000 dollars. Officers include John H. Carter as president F Conley as vice president A S J Davis as vice president and cashier and J F Holden as assistant cashier. The bank succeeds the Blue Ridge bank founded in 1900 by Carter and later converted to a state bank and depository in 1901.
The Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad Company filed a $6,750,000 mortgage to Knickerbocker Trust Company of New York, recorded in Coffee county. The document spans thirty pages and includes $1,125 in internal revenue stamps, reported by the Savannah News via Douglas.
