A Brunswick grand jury examined many witnesses on suspected prohibition violations. They questioned whether whisky was sold locally and by whom, with reports of some blind tiger cases and possible true bills. The panel aims to secure convictions if violations exist and continues hearings.
The Thompson meteorite, which fell near McDuffie Georgia nearly twenty years ago, has been received by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington through the courtesy of George H. Plant of Macon Georgia.
In Williamstown Kentucky Earl Thompson a Black man charged with assaulting Mrs Maggie Roberts was surrounded on a train platform by a mob. Sheriff Michael Caster and two deputies escorted him to the depot then to the jail as the crowd roared lynch him. By late afternoon the mob still surrounded the jail and warned they would hang him if the grand jury does not meet him.
A ten percent discount sale at Welmenovitz drew numerous shoppers on Monday and Tuesday. The offer applies to all staple lines, with a new Christmas assortment and elegant presents also under the discount. A display of "Mary Jane" dresses is available at special prices for the rest of the week. The sale continues through the week at this popular dry goods house.
Relangd Gwinne, a Brunswick cigar maker, was released from Glynn county jail after a grand jury found insufficient evidence in a bigamy case. He had been accused by the bride’s parents of having two other wives in Tampa and Key West, but he claimed legal divorces from both. An investigation reportedly failed to prove nondivorce, and the grand jury cleared him, likely ending the matter.
In Superior Court yesterday the trial of Join Dixon for the Colson Hardware robbery consumed most of the day. Dixon's jury failed to reach a verdict by nightfall, with Judge Parker likely to declare a mistrial today. Tom Powell pled guilty to larceny from the house of over $190 and received three years in the penitentiary. Other actions included State vs Jim Wilson for assault with intent to murder, sentenced to seven months on the chain gang or a $110 fine. Vaughn had first demand for trial allowed.
In Washington the Sixth National Rivers and Harbors congress advocates a 500 million dollar bond issue or 50 million dollars yearly for U S waterways upgrades. President Taft Secretary Dickinson and German ambassador Count von Nernstorff head the opening session with governors and delegates. Dr John A Fox says improved waterways will relieve shipper pressure from railroads.
The passage notes Speaker Cannon sought a family presence in the house galleries at the opening session. With daughter absent, he invited his granddaughter Virginia Lesaere, a cathedral school student, who arrived with a group from her class to witness the event, creating some tension for the speaker.
In St Paul on December 8 President Hawley of the Switchmen's Union says everything is quiet while strikers assert control of rail traffic. Railroad officials declare the strike broken. L E Shepherd head of the Order of Railway Conductors orders conductors to observe strict neutrality.
Senor Castillo, agent for Nicaragua’s revolutionists, received a cable from Bluefields via Estrada indicating a decisive battle expected tomorrow at Rama between Zelaya's forces and the revolutionists. President Zelaya, while pro-revolution sentiment grows, seeks U S support to curb anti American demonstrations.
Washington reports Secretary Knox foresees a US occupation in Nicaragua until a stable government is formed. Zelaya is labeled a murderer for admitting officers Cannon and Grace were with the revolutionary army. US warship commanders are ordered to prevent Zelaya’s escape while if Estrada prevails he faces trial.
New Orleans dispatch reports former Nicaraguan president Cardenas, ousted by Zelaya in 1891, forming an expedition from Costa Rica with about 500 men. The force aims to seize Managua as its objective.
Georgia poet Robert Loveman entertained a large Brunswick audience for the second time in two years at the Grand. His reading of his poems pleased a cultured crowd, with two capable musicians providing soprano and harp numbers. The event, under the Jewish Aid Society, raised a neat sum and was described as a rare, enjoyable treat for all attendees.
Honolulu December 8 George W Woodruff federal judge of the territory of Hawaii cabled his resignation to President Taft concluding his term or duties in the territory.

Demand for the American Red Cross Christmas stamps has topped expectations as orders from the printer exceed 50,000,000 with most already distributed. Eighty percent of proceeds will aid tuberculosis fight programs across states and agencies, while 20 percent goes to Red Cross treasury for related operations.

A flash in the picking room of the Robinson and Roden feather factory in Newark today caused a stampede of sixty workers. The blaze touched inflammable material, injuring four people, including three young women, with serious burns but expected recovery.
President Taft reappointed Albert M. Smith as Brunswick postmaster Tuesday, extending his term to December 9, 1918. Smith faced no opposition for renewal and has overseen growth and upgrades at the Brunswick office since 1905, adding carriers and clerks while modernizing facilities.
