South Carolina Protest Over Colored Troop Training

Governor Manning with Senators Tillman and Smith and the full South Carolina delegation met at the War Department to protest training colored troops in the state. He also opposed sending Porto Ricans to Columbia and suggested Cuba for training. Secretaries Baker will decide. some senators favor local training, others see no friction risk.

Fire Prevention Committee to Inspect Brunswick Industries

Under the Georgia Fire Prevention Committee of National Defense a Brunswick inspection is set for Monday the 27th. Fire underwriters engineers and insurance agents will inspect cotton storage warehouses shipyards cotton seed oil mills wholesale grocers and related facilities to prevent fires that could hinder war efforts. The letter urges coordination with mayor fire chief police chief Board of Trade dock board electric plant waterworks Woman’s Club and other civic groups and to hold a joint briefing during the committee visit.
