Many Contests to Be Decided in Coming Primary

Glynn county residents and state voters head to Wednesday’s primary for a full slate of state officers and twelve congressmen. The governor’s race is quiet with Slaton favored. Parker and Hall contest the congressional seat between Walker and Waycross judge. Three candidates seek Brunswick circuit solicitor general and several other state offices face opposition. The statewide primary promises an unusually lively election.

Special Trip to Lightship by Sea Gate August 20

The steamer Sea Gate will run a special trip to the Lightship Tuesday morning August 20 leaving docks at 9 a.m. and Ocean Pier at 10 a.m. It returns to the city by 2 p.m. Fares are 1.00 for sound trip from Brunswick and 0.75 for round trip from St. Simon.

Double tracking of the Southern 15 under way

Atlanta reports the Southern railway begins extending double track from Roseland to Constitution, three miles, adding seven miles of double track toward Macon and Jacksonville. C. W. Lane & Co. handles grading as modern sidings and passing tracks are added to boost westbound traffic and winter service.

Two More Games Planned for Adel Brunswick Base Ball Club

Adel Brunswick's baseball team will stay together until Labor Day and play daily this week. Monday and Tuesday match the last Adel club in a 13 inning tie, with two added pitchers Elliott and Carter joining the visitors. An excursion to Fernandina is planned for Wednesday, and a Savannah series is expected Thursday through Saturday. Fans are urged to attend as crowds are anticipated.

Darrow Cleared by Jury in Bribery Case

Taft vows veto over commerce court abolition in bill

President Taft said he will veto the legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill if it includes the plan to abolish the commerce court. He urged no compromise and warned Democratic leaders he will fight congress to retain the court, while noting the civil service tenure section was dropped from the bill.

Glynn County Expects Exhibit at Minnesota State Fair

The Georgia Trading and Development company led by Paul Keine has secured space at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul next month. It seeks Glynn county products to attract western farmers, with pamphlets distributed locally and nationally, and calls for contributions sent to Gloucester Street office.

Blackbeard Island to be leased by government for five years

Washington announced Blackbeard Island in McIntosh County between Brunswick and Savannah will be leased for five years with buildings and hunting and fishing privileges. Bids open August 24 in Washington. Detroit capitalist H. E. Coffin is expected to lease the site, known as a major South Atlantic game preserve, for hunting use.

Georgia Coast and Piedmont extension progress near Darien

The Darien Gazette reports rapid work on the Bruns Wick extension with two large bridges spanning the Darien and Altamaha rivers to be among Georgia’s largest. Streets Uroad and Walton are being cut to track level, laborers are advancing grading, and the library building will relocate to the Atwood building as bridge and trestle work nears.
