Disastrous Strike Threatens U S Railroad Traffic

President Wilson postponed further talks with railroad managers and workers until tomorrow. The White House will host the general committee of 640 employees as managers and unions weigh an eight hour day for six months while arbitration and overtime terms are debated amid deadlock.

Two Special Trains for Firemen Leaders to Washington

W S Carter president of the Brotherhood of Firemen and Enginemen said he planned to go to Washington with the 640 committee chairmen for strike negotiations with President Wilson. Arrangements were made for two special trains to carry the chairmen to Washington after a conference here.

Disease outbreak in town adult case of infantile paralysis

Dr. G V Cate says Henry Head has infantile paralysis the only local case. Quarantine lifted for adults but children under 16 may not enter the residence. Patient resting well and likely to be up soon. Quarantine for children to end in about ten days.

Public Health Officer Dr T F Abercrombie travels to Washington with Jeff Brunswick for a national health officers conference beginning today. The meeting will discuss matters of national health policy and coordination among states.

Woodmen of the World Picnic Draws 500 Visitors to St Simons Island

The Woodmen of the World bring about 500 visitors from Hazelhurst and nearby areas to Brunswick for a day trip to St Simons Island. Trains arrive at 8 15 am, with departures to the island at 9 am and return options at 4 and 6 30 pm. Events include a ball game, a 100 yard dash, and a seafood dinner at reduced rates.

Two Negroes Arrested Over Two Fawns in Georgia County

The two men, residents near Everett City, were arrested on charges of violating Georgia game laws by possessing two fawns. Warrants were issued by local game warden R. T. Bunkley after deputy H. W. Manning reported the sighting. Bond was posted and they await trial at the next superior court session. The incident marks the first such case in the county and warns hunters to observe all game regulations during the season.

Navy advances big 315 million shipbuilding program

Washington reports Navy officers face the task of carrying out the nations largest warship building program with a single appropriation. The Navy bill of 315.8 million awaits conference committee settlement of yard appropriations as officials expect swift action and presidential approval in coming days. Explorers find second land in the Arctic a Stefansson team reports

Six members of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Arctic expedition arrived in Nome Alaska with specimens and data and said Stefansson stays in the Arctic to explore a newly discovered land described as a second land beyond Prince Patrick land. The group led by Dr Rudolph Anderson notes Stefansson may not return this season and recounts three years of polar travel and coast surveys near Coronation Gulf and Unon and Dolphin straits.

Decrease in Deaths From Child Plague

New York health bulletin reports a slight fall in infantile paralysis deaths and new cases. In the 24 hours ending 10 a m 34 children died and 113 were stricken, down from 39 deaths and 163 new cases the day before.

Changes Made in Hunting Seasons for Brunswick Area

A telegram from officials reports several changes in Georgia hunting seasons affecting Brunswick and Glynn County. Squirrels are now permitable August 1 to January 1, doves August as well as prior months, and deer and turkey bag limits drop from three to two. gobblers or hens limited to two. The summer duck season opens September 1.

Notable Loss of Taxable Property In Glynn County Seeks Balance

Tax records show Glynn County's taxable property rose about 350 000 over the year, despite losses from a fire demolishing Yargan Rosin & Turpentine and removal of Pittsburg Steel. Auditor Dubberly notes a 6 267 954 value in 1916 with a 29 236 gain over 1915, and says remaining property rose about 40 000 while several major properties vanished.

Lieutenant Harwell Visits City from Camp Harris

Lieutenant Harwell of the Brunswick Riflemen arrived in the city from Camp Harris for a short visit. He said the troops were eager to move to the Mexican border or another area, and noted disappointment over the suspension of orders affecting 25,000 troops. Harwell plans to stay until Sunday. The Epoca reports Germany offered Romania territorial compensation at Austria’s expense if Romania stays neutral.
