In Rome Georgia on August 7 Judge Maddox of Floyd Superior Court named S R Denny of Rome T K Scott of Augusta and FE W Butler of Madison as receivers for the Rome Insurance company. The move followed stockholders plea of mismanagement. Judge Maddox denied the restraining order to stop rein surance in the Cherokee Life Insurance company.

Insurgency in Democratic Ranks Over Battleship Issue

Washington reports a brewing insurgency in the Democratic ranks as the naval appropriation bill nears debate. A cottage near the golf links owned by Mrs. C. C. Califf and occupied by R. M. Wilson burned early this morning. Firemen arrived too late to save the structure, with all household goods destroyed though partially insured.

Special Train Derailed injuring all aboard near Rogers

A Dallas to Fort Worth special Pullman train on the St Louis and San Francisco line derailed at Rogers Arkansas around midnight while turning at high speed. A sleeper plunged into the ditch injuring every passenger, but officials say no deaths. A relief train with doctors rushed to the scene.

Italian Force Fails to Dislodge Ex-Shah Near Shiraz

A force of Italian military police under two Swedish officers was repulsed while attempting to dislodge Mohammed Ali Mirza the ex Shah of Persia from a mountain position ten miles south of Shiraz. One Swedish officer was wounded and twenty mounted police were killed or wounded.

Resigns Judgeship to Seek Solicitor Position

Judge S. D. Dell of Hazlehurst announced he wired Governor Brown resigning as Hazlehurst city court judge to pursue the Brunswick circuit solicitor post. He argued judges should resign when seeking a different political office and said he is pleased with his candidacy and optimistic about Jeff Davis and Appling counties.

Will Quit Livery Business In Brunswick

Findley’s Express Delivery announces that after September 1 the livery feature will be abandoned and the firm will focus on boarding stock. N. W. Baby girl found in suitcase in Savannah district

In Savannah on August 7 a police officer discovered a healthy newborn girl inside a suitcase on the piazza of Mrs. E. M. Harmond’s Gascon Street home facing Forsyth Park. The infant was taken to a local hospital for care.

Mexican Border Shootout Alarms El Paso Troops

Mexican fire again targeted United States troops guarding the border near the El Paso smelter. American soldiers returned fire, suspected by officials to be rebel patrolmen with malice. Guthrie Okla Aug 7 Richard Whitehorse head chief of the Otoe Indians for forty years and said to be more than a hundred years old is dead at his home near Red Rock Okla In 1881 he headed a committee that selected the present reservation in Oklahoma when his tribe was brought here from Nebraska.

Roosevelt Named by Progressive Party for President

The National Progressive party nominated Theodore Roosevelt of New York for president at its Chicago convention with a half hour celebration. William A. Prendergast of New York placed Roosevelt in nomination calling him courageous and a national asset. Jane Addams seconded the nomination. Roosevelt announced plans to depart for New York and Oyster Bay and then tour at least forty states with about sixty campaign days ahead.
