Chicago residents report a drop in violence after days of bloodshed. Troops and militia filled the streets, with 32 deaths and 500 injured citywide. Officials cite mall interference and rain as factors, while fire crews faced sabotage attempts.
Delegates of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers met the president to press concerns about the cost of living. Attorney General Palmer and eight other government officials joined the conference to discuss whether rail rates should rise or prices for commodities should fall.

Atlanta July 31 Senator Bill Harris of Georgia defended the Federal Trade Commission in his first Senate speech since taking office. He rebutted Republican charges against the agency, of which he formerly served as a member and recently chaired before his election.
The three day Senate Agriculture Committee session on Harrison’s Naval Stores bill drew opposition from Brunswick Pensacola Savannah and gulf coast trade groups. A compromise offer was proposed as talks continued with J S Brailey A M Smith Thomas Purse and lawmakers including Hoke Smith Harris Southwick. Senator Smith opposes shifting the naval stores business to the Agriculture Department.
E. L. Cochran, supervisor of bridges and buildings for the Southern Railroad, visited the city for a partial inspection of railroad properties. He plans to stay and study development of city and county Southern properties, meeting with B C Albritton to discuss data on concrete septic tanks manufactured in the county for use on the railroad line.
The Burleson era telegraph charges revert to pre 1919 levels for day telegrams while intrastate night rates stay favorable. Western Union faces possible conflict as rates reset. In Georgia Atlanta, 1912, house debates highway amendments with reconsideration affecting the calendar and two thirds votes, delaying constitutional amendments until the 1912 general election.
Secretary A M Smith of the Brunswick Board of Trade visited town after attending Eaglesmere summer convention of the American City Bureau for two weeks. He is studying economics and trade topics and spoke with Congressmen and Brunswick officials en route home. He attended Harrison bit hearing before the Senate Agriculture Committee and met county commissioner F E Twitty and advisory engineer C F E Conant. Eaglesmere is a resort reachable by a scenic railway from a lake, about twenty miles north of Williamsport, Pa.
E R Dozier formerly of the 751st Machine Gun Battalion Americus has come back from nearly three years service abroad. He works for E R Conant consulting engineer and was with Conant in Savannah when summoned for the Mexican border expedition. WOMEN CANDIDATES FOR GAR Atlanta July 31. The arrival of woman suffrage in Atlanta has brought more women candidates for the bar, according to law teachers here. Most work days and study at night.
A Sunday morning river raid aboard the steamer Atlantic nabbed two men, one white and one colored, as police seized remaining liquor from the bottom near Manic street. Officers Joe Williams Charles Isham Jack Dillon L.M. Russett J. Th. McGill led the raid and took detainees to the County Jail.
Atlanta July 1 announce that option on the Coca Cola Co carried through will result in reorganization and enlargement of the concern, with a New York syndicate taking over ten millions in the deal, said Howard G. Candler president.
