Henry editor and Maude a poetic young woman wander a hillside Sunday afternoon enjoying nature colors and a sense of poetry in trees streams and cattle. Maude exclaims about the beauty and Henry agrees noting poetry in everything including his waste-basket-bushes as they plan to visit a nearby farm.
In an opera box two ladies lift opera glasses to scan a brunette described as striking and pale. The scene hints at gossip about a notable figure, with phrases implying mystery, a cornet player’s motto, and sharp social observation.

A reflective portrait of a boy’s dual nature. Tender, striving, and ambitious yet thoughtless and cruel at times. He hides sensitivity behind bravado, loves companionship, and resists social expectations. Adults mix praise with frustration, yet express deep affection and hope for his growth.
An intruder asks for the editor’s candid opinion on two poems. The editor sighs and sets aside his scissors as the visitor reads with feeling and flat tones. The intruder urges him to hear the second poem, insisting it is vastly superior.
