Old Deskins Tax Receipt From 1858 Preserved Well
Our friend I R Deskins of North Salem showed a tax receipt paid by his grandfather James Deskins for 1858. The collector was Thomas M Rookem of Linn county. taxes covered state asylum and county for 80 40 and 80 acres in section 14 township 58 range 19 and 80 80 40 in section 23. The township later changed to 60. The receipt notes state asylum and county taxes and is seventy seven years old yet preserved as if issued yesterday. J R Deskins now owns 80 acres of the original homestead, with taxes over 35 dollars. The 1858 total appears as 16.55 dollars.
