The region suffered weeks of dry weather with parched pastures and corn silking while beans and ponds dried up. A weekend rain brought relief as fields begin fall plowing and back to work with crops inching toward recovery. The local club met to sew and report quilting funds then planned future events and prayers.
Miss Reba Frances Twyman, reporter for the Poteau News during Evelyn Foster’s absence, completed her duties Saturday and will rest before enrolling at Stephens College in Columbia Missouri. She majors in journalism and will edit Stephens Life. She is praised for her writing ability and known to readers through the Hummel family.
Members of the local P. E. O. chapter and their families enjoyed an annual picnic hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hamilton on Tuesday evening. Supper featured sandwiches fried chicken salad tomatoes deviled eggs potato chips ice tea cake and ice cream. Attending families included Guy Adams H. C. Bailey J. P. Bolling J. T. Calhoun W. H. Dickinson R. A. Glaze L. W. Hummel M. L. Haning H. E. Wicker J. R. Williams and Mesdames Jennie Epperson America Fleming Nellie Seaman and Lorene Whaley.
The Home Workers Club met on August 22 with twelve members present five visitors and many children. Mrs John Fishback attended for the afternoon guiding discussion and activities.

Citizens of Browning are urged to attend a Thursday night pep gathering at 7 30 at the Electric Theatre to show community spirit and support local efforts.
Here From California Mr. and Mrs. Orley Lee of Oakland came to spend time with their mother Mrs. America Fleming and kin. Mr. and Mrs. See head home after business travel to Niagara Falls and a visit with relatives in Galion and Granville Ohio.
Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Nelson arrive as the new school superintendent and live in the former Schrock home. He delayed moving due to illness in his family and began meeting teachers and students before officially starting on Monday at the school building.
William L Bond, age over eighty four, was struck by a car driven by a Kansas City man at a Main Street crossing while returning from his home. He suffered multiple injuries and died about six o'clock Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held at the family home with burial in Purdin cemetery. Bond owned Farmers Store and was a respected local businessman. An obituary will appear next week. The report also notes community activities and a club meeting with attendees and future plans.
Mrs. R. A. Glaze and her daughter Miss Lorraine were entertained Friday afternoon with a one o'clock luncheon. The guests spent the afternoon playing hearts and bridge, with high score honors going to Miss Ella Keithley and Mrs. C. W. Gooch.
Edward Williams departs Sunday for Alexandria Missouri where he has accepted a teaching post in the public schools with a good salary. He is praised as a fine young man and talented musician and his friends here express happiness at his new professional placement.

Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Carpenter conducted a sale at their home Saturday selling their entire furniture and household goods. A large crowd attended and they planned to move to Chillicothe Tuesday, with a return hoped by next spring.

Seventeen members answered the roll call at the August 28 meeting hosted by Mrs J D Mol loy and Mrs Bryan Mol loy. Mrs Tom Morris presided in the absence of the president as plans for achievement were set and a committee formed. Contests were won by Mrs Sam Gooch and Mrs Lewis Arnold. Miss Gladys Marie Gooch visited. A plate lunch followed. next meeting with Mrs Forrest Carr on September 11.
The Sunshine Workers Club gathered Saturday night at the McCollums for an ice cream and cake supper after a one hour program by the lab ladies for their husbands. The free summer concert on Main Street concluded Wednesday night with marches and overtures conducted by Edward Williams guest conductor. Lehman Atherton waved the baton as Sousa’s Star and Stripes Forever played. musicians stored instruments and benches returned to winter quarters after large audiences praised the effort.
Fred Lay of Greentop Missouri and Miss Vera Freeland of this city wed in Trenton on Wednesday August 28 joining in matrimony with Rev. McDonald. Their reception followed with a large list of neighbors friends and pupils attending a bridal shower at the Glaze home. The bride a former teacher and the groom a Kirksville State Teachers College student plan to resume studies and work with Earl May at Shenandoah in the coming two years.
Mr and Mrs J P Turner hosted a Sunday dinner with guests Mr and Mrs Gus Boyles A L Brown and children Elizabeth Norma Lee and A L and Mrs Anna Lee Maloney and son Wayne. The guests report an enjoyable time and call the hosts ideal entertainers.
Here From Kansas City Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Myers and daughter of Kansas City spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Carter and other relatives in this city. Mr. Myers has a good position as yard master for the Wabash and he feels that things are getting better and said that the company were using many more men than they did some time back. Miss Mary Carter who had been their guest for some days returned to her home here so as to enter school Monday.
Fourteen members and four teen visitors met with Mrs. Amelia Kelley on August 22 to stitch and chatter. They completed tea towels and pillow slips, cut and pieced quilt blocks, and made a dress for Merilee. Clara presided in the absence of president and secretary.
