American Legion Second District Meet in Brookfield

The American Legion Second District met in Brookfield with post No. 182 hosting. A large turnout from eight counties attended a parade led by the Brookfield band and marching units from Trenton Chillicothe and Brookfield, followed by speeches from district and department leaders and a joint Legion and Auxiliary meeting at the high school.

Death of Daniel B Harbolt in Missouri Obit

Daniel Bruce Harbolt was born April 29 1859 in Douglas Illinois and died November 1 1934 at his niece Mrs J E Spencer home near Purdin Missouri. He left many nieces and nephews and other relatives. one brother and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were at Bethel church near Winigan Missouri with interment in the local cemetery. Mr and Mrs Will Mundt of Pa ton Iowa attended the services.

The Friendship Circle held a Halloween party on Tuesday October 30 with Kath ryn Cumbo. Local Club Honors Masked Couple at Event

The club awarded a prize for the best masked pair and named Marjorie Smith and Kathryn Smith as winners. Attendees enjoyed pie sandwiches and coffee as C. R. helped organize the gathering.

Halloween Party for Bitter-Sweet Club in Shafter

Mrs. Ida Smith hosted a Halloween party October 31 at her Shafter home for the Bitter-Sweet club and families. Costumes and disguises filled the room as judges unmasked guests. Willard Powell as Miss High-Water and Moe Morris as Aunt Sophron won. Fortunes were read, songs and piano pieces entertained, with pumpkin pie and coffee to end the program.

The Live Wire class of the M E Church South met with Mr and Mrs Burton Carr on Monday evening. Merril Peterson acted as Chaplain. After the business meeting several contests were enjoyed with Mrs Calhoun and Gladys Atkins winning prizes. A covered dish supper followed. Mid-Week Bridge Club Hosts and Quilt Work

Mrs Leon Kenley hosted the Mid-Week Bridge Club on October 24 with four tables of auction bridge. High score honors went to Mrs Kenneth Williams and a lap luncheon followed. Attendees included Mrs Williams, Mrs Rinehart, Mrs Brassfield, Mrs Nickell, Mrs Hoselton, Mrs Smith and guests Mrs Worley Eddie Lee and Mrs Peters. The club met previously with Mrs Nickell to work on a quilt top, with refreshments served by Mrs Nickell.

The Standifer clan gathered at Mrs. J. D. Lambert’s home on Sunday October 28 with Betsy Canada Cordray Cathern Lacount and others. A reading by Lucille Head followed dinner served cafeteria style. The group later paraded a wheelbarrow ride down Locust Creek Road and quieted with late evening departures unsure of a marriage.

Miss Vera Freeland organized a Hallowe'en party at Custer Linhart's barn on October 31. The 8th grade led by Mary Ruth Harris staged a wedding scene, the 7th grade under Evelyn Miller performed a short play, with ghosts guiding guests through fun obstacles.

Trophy to Karol Gene Hoerrmann in Sears baby contest

Karol Gene Hoerrmann, 21 months old and son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Hoerrmann near Green City, received a 1934 Sears trophy medal as a premium for Sears prettiest baby contest. Selections were made from pictures of youngsters from different states. Mrs. Hoerrmann was formerly Miss Kathleen Nickell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Nickell near Winigan and a local high school graduate.

Democrats Triumph in Tuesday Election Across Regions

The Tuesday city election saw large voter turnout and quiet conditions. Democrats swept Linn County and dominated Sullivan County with few exceptions. Kansas City swung Democratic with a large margin, and St Louis moved into the Democratic column by over 50 thousand votes.

Frank Smith operated a shoe repair shop at his home in the city. He came here from Iowa a year ago and made many friends in business and social circles. His body was sent to Iowa yesterday for burial. The wife and relatives receive community sympathy.
