A long homily urges teaching girls to manage a home while boys learn discipline and industry. It extols maternal influence during early childhood, condemns idleness, and urges family duties over leisure, citing a grandmother’s letter about home and garden tasks and the value of a mother’s guidance.
A Francia front letter dated September 21 1918 from Mrs S 8 Cotter to her sister writes she is well hopes siblings are well and asks about melons and father. She mentions nearing home and has not been to town recently continuing with a military note.
Dr Bartlett writes from Marfa Texas October 27 1918 describing life with the 8th Cavalry in the Big Bend District. He praises cavalry work notes duties with the Veterinary Detachment overseeing horse care water supply forage and meat inspection and mentions travel between outposts along the Rio Grande and a Ford vehicle.
In France on Sept 30 1918 Private William A Bond writes to family about shelling and long marches with the 354th Infantry. He recalls ration shortages, found shelter with a bed and supplies, Red Cross aid, prisoners seen, and hints at possible transfer to a band while praising comrades and Vails of the Doughboys.
Rachel M Waits born October 25 1839 in Ray county Missouri moved to Atchison county as a child. She married George R Bailey and had eight children four predeceased her. surviving children include Ida Thurlo Clara Miller Bailey and Leonard Bailey. She joined the M E church at 15 later aligning with M E C South and remained. She was a loving mother and Christian, loved by all who knew her, and leaves sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
