A long plea for national economic reform urges direct purchasing from local merchants to cut delivery waste and support home commerce. It touts Arbor Day tree planting, public school forestry education, and active town boosterism, urging citizens to shop local and improve roads, schools, and industry.
A wartime letter recounts arrival at St. Louis recruitment on April 2 1918 with 144 boys. Recruits signed insurance papers then learned they would go to Great Lakes Naval Training Station the largest in the world, easing longing for home and possible sea duty.
A Special Train from French fields will visit Brookfield next Friday May 11 for two hours from 9 to 11 am. The train carries war trophies supplied by the United States and French governments including German guns shells enemy helmets and other relics from World War I.
A traveling exhibit features a platform walkable display of war engines in English French and American soldiers talks. National figures will speak in support of the 3rd Liberty Loan Bonds as the train stops in Brookfield for two hours from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday May 3.
Obituary notices report the deaths of Martha E Dillon Cokerham aged 68 in Purdin Missouri and James Hatch aged 72 in Linneus Missouri. Martha E Dillon married Elias W Cokerham in 1868 and raised eleven children. funeral was at New Church of Christ Purdin. James Hatch, converted 1914, married Rachel Cotter in 1870, survived by a wife and seven children plus grandchildren. burial at Jenkins Cemetery after services in Tina.
Camp Funston Military Band drew a large Brookfield crowd despite rain. Arrangements had been made to host them Sunday morning with eight cars requested. Weather forced cancellation of a Saturday visit, though band members passed through town Sunday evening en route to Milan, with many townspeople and country residents on hand to honor them.
William H Hatch is recorded as born in Will County Illinois on the 8th day of the month in the historical column.
Frank Nickell, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Nickell, was born in Sullivan County Missouri on June 11 1998. After a measles illness and a lapse he died Sunday April 28 at age nine years ten months and seventeen days. Funeral services were held at White Oak Grove Church conducted by Rev. J F Patton. He is survived by his parents two brothers two sisters and many relatives and friends.
