Early plowing aids wheat yield and Hessian fly control

R E Uhland of the Missouri College of Agriculture urges very early plowing of wheat land to fight Hessian fly damage. July plowing of stubble land preserves moisture and nutrients, reduces weeds, and allows delayed seeding to avoid peak fly activity while maintaining winter-kill risk low. Kansas trials support higher yields from early plowing. The seed bed should be deep, firm, and mellow, achieved by early plowing, periodic cultivation, and final soil conditioning before sowing.
