A dated essay urges men to acquire good manners at home to appear confident abroad. It links household civility to social ease, warns that roughness at home breeds rudeness, and stresses affectionate letters to mothers. It also argues marriage enriches society and warns husbands to treat wives with indifference and sarcasm to secure obedience.
The couple Forrest Palmer and Lois Estes married quietly last Friday January 18 at Rev Woods home in Greenfield. The groom is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs C W Palmer and the bride is the second daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Estes both local residents awaiting possession of a rented farm. Their friends wish them peace and prosperity.
The Food Administration urges shoppers to review grocers’ posters to ensure they have signed the retailer pledge. In Missouri 2850 grocers have pledged, part of a national effort where 75,000 of 350,000 grocers joined last week. The aim is to secure fair prices through patriotic patronage and enforce food laws against unfair practices.
The poster pledge by a retail grocer records voluntary cooperation with Food Administration aims for fair prices. Dean Mumford stresses retailers are key to public price relief and pledges are being collected by wholesale grocers and their salesmen. Many grocers have not yet signed as the drive started last week, but all will have a chance before month end.
The note thanks subscribers and urges payment on the paid in advance plan. It lists several names and addresses as delinquent or overdue and asks readers to check their paper tag for the 18 or 19 year mark and mail a check to update.
The letter from Agra Oklahoma dated January 27, 1918 notes Ramsey paying eight dollars in advance for a date and urging Joe Neckell to proceed with collecting payments. Ramsey mentions severe winter weather with seven below zero and snow. He signs as Your Friend D L Ramsey.
A Milan visitor arrives with bills of lading for four barrels of whiskey three barrels of beer and three crates of empty ske nts. The local agent refuses delivery to the Milan interested party and questions the shipment’s fictitious consignments and plan.
An account notes a failed booze shipment routed through Reger and Milan before returning to Kansas City. The article suggests the liquor was strong and used with snow water, but a contrary agent at Reger spoiled the plan by forwarding the shipment to Milan and back to the consignor in Kansas City.
From Camp Myers Fort Myer Virginia January 29 1918 Ray Nickell 443 Truck Company writes of moving to Camp Lee Virginia expects a promotion early next month describes a snow day in camp tours of Washington including the Washington Monument the Capitol and Lincoln relics mentions a trip to Mount Vernon and the trolley fare and plantation visit notes the ease of getting lost in Washington and signs off promising another letter home to all.
A Fossil Oregon reader writes the Leader-Record to enclose a 1.50 check to alter his paper’s date once more. He notes the winter has been unusually mild with little snow in twenty one years and references cold spells earlier in the season.
October weather includes 14 above zero readings and extensive fall grain planting completed. Livestock continue to graze on grass as spring crop preparation nears end. Very respectfully, W. J. Van Horn.
A reader complaints about disruptive gatherings of youths in the city post office lobby on Sundays. They describe noise, pushing older patrons, and posters torn or damaged. The letter asks for more space and better order to improve service for the good people of the city.
Doris Evelyn Britton, infant daughter of Carl M. and Blanche Britton, died February 1, 1918 at one week old. She was laid to rest in Mt. Zion cemetery on February 2. The family offered a prayerful verse about the tiny sunbeam and a blessing from heaven.
