The article counsels farmers to improve soil fertility before crops, install a manure spreader and gasoline engine, store ice for cold snaps, store wood for spring, and plant pure bred seed corn. It stresses energy and brains, road dragging with King split log drags, and hiring help to maintain fields, barns, and water access.
Roy E Gibson, age 22, began his career at the Fourth National Bank of St Louis and stayed through its absorption by the National Bank of Commerce in 1906. He then joined the Traders National Bank of Kansas City and recently resigned to become assistant cashier at the Planters Bank of St Louis, starting February 1. The promotion is noted as a rare achievement for such a young man with a bright future ahead.
Alfred Maggart and Dora Harmon were married last Tuesday in Milan with Rev. Childers officiating. Maggart, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Maggart of near Leoffler, Mo., is a respected Young farmer. Harmon, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Harmon, is a popular Duncan Township resident. The couple begin married life with strong prospects and ample good wishes from friends.
The office acknowledges receipt of The Philippines as an Asset by Harald M. Pitt sent via A. B. Burkholder. The pamphlet offers useful information on productions exports imports and population with many places and scenes. Also notes Wm. Houck and son A. W. Houck and families moved to West Plains Missouri from their previous home.
Cattle prices drifted lower early last week with below normal receipts but recovered late in the week. Today 6000 head on hand. buyers active as supply tightens. Steers to 6.65, cows 3.00 to 5.25, heifers 3.50 to 5.75, calves 3.75 to 8.50, bulls 3.50 to 4.90, stockers 3.25 to 5.00. Hog supply 8000 head. market strong to 5 higher, top 8.40, 8.10 to 8.35 bulk. Sheep and lambs 15 to 25 cents higher today after a weak week.
In the presence of many friends William Lumsden and Miss Belvin Bundridge were united in marriage at high noon on Sunday January 30. Judge Andrews officiated at the Bundridge home parlor. A lavish dinner followed and gifts poured in from a host of friends. The couple will move to Canada to start their life together with best wishes for happiness.
All accounts due on January 1 1910 will draw interest from that date. I will not carry accounts longer than 30 days without all accts. Will draw interest after 90 days from date. HL Clay Jones.
The notice lists the sale of M. H. Skeen’s property scheduled for Thursday February 10.
The Citizens Bank of Roger received its charter on Tuesday and began business Wednesday morning. Guy F. Davis elected cashier replacing J. L. Shepherd who declined the job. Davis, formerly a popular local teacher, is expected to run an efficient cash drawer. The old bank's building and fixtures were sold to the new bank. Campbell, the former cashier, leaves for the West for health reasons. The bank is expected to become a leading financial institution in Sullivan County.
Saturday night Mr and Mrs L T Wykoff entertained in honor of their daughter Miss Florence for her twelfth birthday. A large number of her young friends attended and brought many presents. The evening featured games and refreshments of ice cream and cake as guests departed wishing Florence many more happy birthdays.
The group met January 26 at Mrs. Mary E. Van Wye’s home and conducted business before a social hour with papers on Presidents. Nine members answered rolling call. Next meeting set for February 9 led by Lorene Veey.
The Friday term at Smith with W P Nickell as teacher featured a program of music recitations readings and dialogues by district ladies who sold well filled boxes to raise funds for a library. Proceeds totaled 12.80 to buy a set of encyclopedias. The event left attendees feeling profitable and pleased.
W P Carter and J W Fields traveled to St Louis at the start of the week and marketed three car loads of horses bought the week prior. They have been the largest horse shippers to St Louis over the past year, and this week marks their first time with three loads on the market. Indications suggest they will far exceed last year’s business.
Friday night the ladies of the M. E. church entertained the children of their Sunday school at the residence of Rev. and Mrs. Will L. Barkley. Prizes were awarded to Susie Wallace George Peters Mable Burdette and Fern Nickell. Light refreshments of whipped cream bananas cookies and coffee were served. All report a very enjoyable evening.
A Saturday combination sale faced heavy snow yet drew a large crowd and spirited bidding. Purchases pleased buyers and the managers plan another sale soon.
Wm Harvey states coal will be priced at 11 cents per unit daily, indicating a steady daily rate and planned schedule for shipments.
J. R. Crookshanks sale ad appears in this issue. J. R. Cassity bought six horses in Milan on Thursday. Ike Gooch visited Green City on Friday to see his daughter. A. J. Mead returned Friday from a county seat business trip in Linn County.
