Harvest Festival Parade Opens Big Day of Texas Tech Displays

The Harvest Festival starts Saturday Oct 4 at 11 a.m. with a parade featuring area bands floats and eight Queen of Harvest Festival candidates. Prizes total over 5000 with a 1970 Ford Maverick grand prize after 9 p.m. and a day of contests dances and performances by Texette Sextet and Lubbock groups.

United Fund Kickoff Sets $25,500 Goal for Terry County

The 1969 Terry County United Fund begins with a 7 a.m. breakfast at Oak Grove cafeteria on Oct 21. Charles Paul, president, notes a goal of 25 500, down from 26 711 last year, with four agencies receiving reduced requests and residents urged to contribute.

Rites Held For Wood E. Johnson

Funeral services were held for Wood E. Johnson 78 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. Burial followed in Brownfield Cemetery. Johnson who lived in Johnson Community since 1905 died in Brownfield General Hospital from injuries from a September 9 auto accident. He was a World War I veteran and former county sheriff and commissioner. Survivors include his wife, two sons, two stepsons, a daughter in law, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers named.

SCD Director To Be Named

Monroe Rowden's term as director of the Soil Conservation District Place One ends. Citizens will vote on Friday October 10 from 8 30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the County Agent's office. The district covers territory bounded by Wellman highway to Gaines County Line and Plains Highway in Tokio. Terms are five years. Rowden currently chairs the district and is eligible for re election.

County Group Backs CAP Plan For Terry County

More than 90 residents heard Bob Allen of the Texas Board of Economy outline the Community Action Program. County Judge W T McKinney announced a local CAP steering committee led by Commissioner Wayne Mullins and a vote approved launching CAP in Terry County to aid low income families including Brownfield residents with 25 percent of local wages below the poverty line.

Probated Sentences and Restitution Set in County Court

Roy A Key pleaded guilty to misappropriation of county funds and received a five year sentence in the federal peniten tiary suspended for probation under Texas adult probation laws. He must pay restitution of 2091.02 and 50.50 court costs, at 30 per month starting November 1, with full payment due 15 days before the five year term ends.
