Plains couple Mark Abbott returns from Europe trip
Rev Mark Abbott and wife Diane of Plains arrived home August 19 after visiting Spain and Portugal. Diane traveled July 27 with her mother to Lisbon to visit Kathie Bird and family. Kathie is a harpist with the Lisbon Opera, Bruce Bird teaches English, and a daughter Marta Pearl Bird was born August 2 in Lisbon.

Gomez Community Reunion and Local Club Activities Report
The Gomez community held its annual Gomez Community Reunion at the Gomez Baptist Church on September 12 with a 10:00 registration by Barbara Gregg and a noon covered dish lunch. Officers elected were Ross Black president Thomas Doss vice president Beatrice Blackstock secretary and Eva Sears treasurer. A plan to hold the reunion yearly on the first Saturday after Labor Day was adopted. The trip of Joe Bailey Whitley from San Anna California was noted as the longest distance. Bonny Black Melton was named Gomez’s earliest resident, arriving in 1906. Former teachers Raymond Simms Rena McLeRoy Bozeman and Vivian McLeroy Stone attended. About 60 people enjoyed reminiscences and songs led by Raymond Simms. The Gomez Baptist Church hosted the South Plains Baptist Associational meeting on September 14 with a 5:30 meal and 6:30 board meeting led by Rev. Harold Harrison. The Gomez Extension Homemakers Club met September 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Mrs. Kellie Sears’ home with an inspirational talk Hearts Gifts. Treasurer Vivian Stone reported most club cookbooks sold. Plans for a Thanksgiving dinner were made with committee members Mary Hall Joyce Britton and Eva Sears. Nominating committee members were Ludell Patton Vivian Stone and Lynn Black. Terry County Fair catalogues were distributed and members were urged to enter divisions. A program on A One Dish Meal featured demonstrations by Mrs. Britton. Recreation saw Mrs. Stone win a guessing game prize. The next meeting on September 24 will involve fair help. A lengthy quotation on the value of a teacher’s influence and reflections on faith and travel was included, mentioning Kingsley and Booker T. Washington among other excerpts.
