Sidewalk Sale Planning Starting To Take Shape

Local presidents from Brownfield hemc clubs met at the Chamber of Commerce to map September 28 sidewalk sale booths. Plans cover booth types for drinks and snacks, kid rides, and space around the courthouse square with traffic control. Merchants urged to participate, with call-in numbers and a detailed map listing 55 designated business spots and flexible space options. A progress meeting for contact workers is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Chamber.

Wellman Girl Speaks At Optimist Club Meeting

Janie Golden of Wellman gave a detailed talk on What is an American at the Optimist Club luncheon in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas. She shared a broader view of American life, contrasted with communism, and described her Citizenship Seminar experience at Sam Houston State Teachers College.

Hereford sugar refinery set for dedication in October

West Texas gains a sugar refining plant as Holly Sugar Refinery of Hereford plans a 22 million dollar facility to process sugar beets planted last spring. Dedication ceremonies are slated for Saturday September 19 with Governor Connally to deliver the main address.

Quiet Prevalent On Local Scene

Local police and sheriff reports show a calm period with several incidents. Theft of a trading stamps book from Key Grocery, a tire missing from a pickup, and a purse with cards and ID stolen from a shopper are noted. multiple arrests for drunkenness and minor consumption, plus traffic warrant cases and a check warrant for Gilbert Becker. One traffic accident in East Lons injured a person.

Film On Stock Exchange Shown At Rotary Luncheon

Rotary Club members at the Party House heard a film about the New York Stock Exchange presented by Curtis Sterling a former Brownfield resident now with Southwest Rotary in Lubbock. President Bill Noble led the meeting with Dale Durham singing and Dr. Jess Borum giving the invocation. Guest Craig Collier a local high school student attended.

Virtues of Americanism Emphasized by Local Students

Three Terry County high school students Linda Horton Janie Golden and Mike Paddack spoke at the Brownfield Lions Club meeting on strengthening Americanism and countering communism each presenting on a related topic Horton detailed communist advances Golden urged positive steps to halt the spread and all three noted their recent Terry County Citizenship Seminar at Sam Houston State Teachers College Huntsville sponsored by the Texas Farm Bureau

Mrs Stockton services scheduled in Brownfield area

Services for Mrs W Martha Stockton 84 will be at 10 am Monday at Brownfield Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev A J Franks officiating. She died after a lengthy illness and had lived in Terl County since 1921. Survivors include four sons Luke Grady Lee and Willard all of Salinas California six grandchildren and forty four great grandchildren and three daughters Virgil Kinard Myrtle Brewer and J C Hart.

Howard Services Held In Haskell

Funeral services for Fred Howard of Haskell were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at East Side Baptist Church. He died Thursday in a Stamford hospital after a long illness aged 70. Survivors include several relatives in Brownfield White Face Fort Sumner and St Louis. His parents lived in Gomez and the family later farmed in Terry County.

Enrollments Rise Across Brownfield and District Schools

Brownfield School System reports 3110 pupils enrolled as of Thursday, up 44 from a year ago and 229 more than the first day of this school year. Wellman totals 268, Union 173, Meadow 430, with gains across all four schools as harvest season approaches.
