Labor Day Holiday Schedules Hit Brownfield Area

Most Brownfield residents will work Monday as Labor Day is observed. A three day weekend closes banks, courthouse, city hall, and many government offices. Sep Dollar Day is set for Sept 11. Meadow Public School opens Monday while Brownfield Wellman and Union schools delay until Tuesday.

Services Set For Mrs. Eva Ruark in Church of God

Funeral services for 66 year old Eva M. Ruark will be held at 3 p.m. in the Church of God with Rev. Charles Prince officiating. Burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home guidance. She died Friday at St Marys Hospital in Lubbock after a short illness. Survivors include husband Dallas two sons Jack Brownfield and Dee Dimmitt four daughters Ava Gay Bill Rt 3 Hereford Billy Joyce Slaton Sue Fan Patsy Bridges Goleta Calif two brothers S Q McFall Quitaque Joe McFall Sholow Ariz four sisters Iva Denton Lovington NM Ava Hawkins Quitaque Ola Osman Post Ione Rogers Clairemont 12 grandchildren four great grandchildren.

Funds Set Up For Terry Roads

The Texas Highway Commission approved 458000 dollars for highway safety and farm to market road improvements in Terry County for 1968. District Engineer Oscar L. Crain of Lubbock said 21.1 highway miles will be upgraded under the 1968 Farm to Market Road and State Highway Safety and Betterment Program, supervised by Carl R. Hart from the local office.

Water Inc Leaders Meet Texas Board On State Water Plan

Water Inc executive committee met in Austin with the Texas Water Development Board to discuss the state wide plan for transporting additional water to the High Plains for irrigation municipal and industrial use. John Kendrick said Water Inc backs the plan and expects staff cooperation and early completion. J W Buchanan noted import needs may exceed initial estimates prompting further studies and interagency coordination including state and federal partners. Chamber SCS Annual Field Tour Sept 15

The Field Day Tour sponsored by Terry County Soil Conservation Service District 151 and the Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will be Sept 15 from 9 am to 12 noon. Eight air conditioned buses depart at 9 from the courthouse square and return to Coleman Park for a barbequed beef luncheon catered by Farr's Cafeteria. The 1967 Outstanding Conservation and Diversified Farmer will be named on the tour with a plaque awarded at the honoree’s farm. J. W. Hawkins received the honor in 1966.

Rotary Club Davis Explains Cotton Program

Dan Davis manager of the Plains Cooperative Cotton Association of Lubbock spoke at the Rotary Club meeting on Friday. He outlined current cotton laws, surplus status, and outlook, urging on Plains producers a shift to higher quality cotton and careful production limits to maintain price stability. Congressman George Mahon attended as guest and asked questions. others present included visiting Rotarians from Levelland and Lubbock and local club members.

Services Held For Gene Wood

Services for Gene Wood 19 were held at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. Burial followed in Terry County. Wood died at 9 30 p m Thursday in St Frances Hospital Colorado Springs following a short illness after vacationing with his family. Born in Lamesa he moved to Brownfield in 1955 and graduated from Brownfield High School in 1966. He worked in the parts department at Terry County Tractor Company. Survived by his parents Mr and Mrs E H Wood one sister Mrs Carol Addison his grandparents Mrs Martha Wood and Mrs Ed Kramer.

Blue Law dispute tightens Sunday sales across town

The60th Legislature repealed the emergency clause of the blue law to ban Sunday sales of items previously allowed on Saturdays. Merchants report confusion and will mark prohibited goods clearly while observers expect enforcement to be difficult. Offenses carry fines up to100 dollars for a first offense and up to five hundred dollars or six months in jail for subsequent violations.
