Local Optimist Club Schedules Youth Appreciation Week

Brownfield Optimist Club will observe Youth Appreciation Week starting Monday and running through November 20. Each county high school will submit students for recognition. a screening committee will prune to 10, with the Optimists Board choosing three. The honorees and parents will attend a luncheon Thursday at noon at the Party House.

Cotton Harvest Takes Big Jump in Terry County

Texas Employment Commission reports Terry County gins have ginned 27 133 bales of cotton this fall a rise of 17 894 from last week and 23 094 samples have been classed for the season. TEC seeks workers for cotton trailers and farm labor with the TEC office in the basement of the courthouse.

A Sales Management report shows Brownfield households increasingly fall into middle and upper income brackets. In Brownfield 61.1 percent earned 4900 or more after taxes, above regional and state figures, with 12.7 percent at 7000 to 10000 and 23.8 percent at 4000 to 7000.

Taxpayers Cash in On Discount Period

Tax assessor collector Stanley Miller reports $140,319.28 in current city taxes collected, about 65.76 percent of the total, with three percent October and two and one percent discounts in November and December. Delinquent taxes accrue penalties up to 11 percent by July 1, plus monthly adds, while 58 percent funds go to General Fund and 42 percent to bond interest and sinking fund.

Standstill in Local Law Activity After Wednesday Wreck

City police logged a minor wreck at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Second and Hill involving Rita C. Snodgrass and Norman F. Lovelace, both of Tokio. Sheriff’s office arrested Eusebio Gallegos Jr. for theft over $50, released on a $500 bond. Prank calls reported to E. C. Merritt and a theft at 702 Fast Lake were noted.

Rain Delays Cotton Harvest Across South Plains

Weather halted the South Plains cotton harvest after a push to 35,000 samples daily as rain sleet and snow interrupted efforts. For the week ending November 9th the Lubbock Brownfield and Lamesa offices together classed 83,000 samples with 56,000 at Lubbock, 16,000 at Brownfield and 11,000 at Lamesa.
