Brownfield High honors student achievements
Brownfield High School crowned top scholars in the class of 130, naming Steve Cawthon valedictorian and Sam Miller salutatorian at the all school honors assembly. Cawthon also earned All School Outstanding and Outstanding Senior Boy honors, while Rita Garcia was named All School Outstanding and Outstanding Senior Girl. Other Who's Who selections included Tiffany Rudd, Sonia Washington, Michelle Curtis, Regina Holmes, Grady Muldrow, Jeff Milburn, Reese Wright, with Tim Powers and Kristi Cawthon noted. Numerous scholarships were awarded to various seniors, including Rotary and Alpha Omega Study Club honors, with prior scholarships announced earlier.

First National Bank promotes two senior officers
The First National Bank board announced two internal promotions at a Wednesday morning press conference. Leonard Ellington becomes executive vice president in charge of administration, replacing John Duggan who resigned for a position in Amarillo. Ellington, a Brownfield native since 1951, moves from the trust department to the first floor on June 1. Johnny Willis becomes senior vice president and head of the trust department, after joining the bank in 1960 and serving as Ellington’s assistant. Peggy Gillespie will assist in the trust department. Terry Roach becomes secretary to the trust officers.

Grand Jury Sets Spring Session in Terry County Court
Terry County Grand Jury will meet in a spring session Monday at the Terry County Courthouse with four cases to be considered. Henry Sandage Jr is charged with possession of marijuana Richard Carroll Man is charged with two counts of possession of a forged instrument Roy Joe Solis is charged with one count of burglary of a building and one count of burglary of a habitation.

Brownfield FFA names outstanding members and officers
About 200 people attended the Brownfield Future Farmers of America Ice Cream Supper at the high school to honor major awards and install 1984 85 officers. Geoff Cooper was named to head the chapter again, the first two year president. Officers installed include Roger Baker vice president and Billy Hays treasurer.

Mother's Day origin and origins traced to Anna Jarvis
A West Virginia woman Anna Reeves Jarvis conceived Mother's Day after her mother’s 1906 death. The first observance occurred in 1908 in Grafton with a church sermon, and by 1913 Congress made it a national holiday. President Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
