Council swears in four members as Brownfield shuffles roles

Brownfield City Council on Thursday sworn in two current and two new members, with Roy Edwards returning to District Four duties and Nancy Wade taking District Five. New at large members Barney Lindly and David Ervin led a slate of board appointments including Zoning and Cemetery boards, while outgoing members were honored. The council also approved waivers and purchases, securing better loan rates for an $84,955 street sweeper and a $57,829 city software system.

Brownfield High School honors top students at awards assembly

Brownfield High School held an awards assembly in Cub Gym recognizing the freshman, sophomore and junior classes for 1996-97 achievements. Recipients included Class Outstanding Students Natasha Cornett and David Sanchez for juniors, Carol Mason and Jeremy Brown for sophomores, Farron Yowell and Sean Decker for freshmen, plus UIL Academic and National Honor Society awards and special scholarships.

Prison escapes rare say wardens of local facilities

Wardens in local facilities say inmate escapes are very rare. They emphasize stringent training, security culture, and controlled environments at Jim Rudd Jail Transfer Facility and Brownfield Intermediate Sanction Facility. The Rudd Unit houses inmates new to the Texas penal system with a six week staff training program and two week on the job phase.

Storms flood Terry County with heavy rainfall

Official weather data show Brownfield and surrounding areas on the South Plains received widespread rainfall Thursday night, with some locations reporting up to five inches. Readings ranged from 1 to 4 inches across Brownfield, with several gins and farms recording 1 to 2 1/2 inches and no significant hail or wind damage reported by officials.
