Wellman tracksters win state 1600 relay title

Four Wellman High School girls tracksters led by freshman Melissa Cornelius win three events at the Six-Man Girls State Meet in Stephenville. Cornelius anchors the 800 and 400 wins and helps the 1,600-meter relay clock 4:20.68. Moorhead Lusk and Odom join for the relay and triple jump also noted.

Willis to end 29 year BISD career

James Willis Brownfield ISD Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance will retire this spring after 29 years with the district. He began as a high school teacher in economics typing history and English before becoming Business Director and then his current title. Willis, a Morton native, served as a first lieutenant navigator bombardier in the Air Force, witnessed Europe during the Allied Occupation, and earned a masters in Business Management from New Mexico Highlands. He and his wife Mary Petree of Farwell have one son Rick.

Seat belts save two in roll over accident

Plains couple avoids serious injury after a rollover on US 62 82 four miles south of Brownfield. Carlos Torrez 23 and his wife Rachel 20 wore seat belts, preventing major harm. He faces DPS charges for Unsafe Speed and No Liability Insurance.

Brownfield mayor and councilmen re-elected in light turnout

Voter turnout was noticeably light as Brownfield mayor Jack Cargill and three city councilmen were re elected in Thursday's city election. Cargill won 143 votes, with J D Bell written in twice and 171 voters casting ballots. Swearing in is set for 7 30 a m at the council chambers.

Meadow and area vote tails show low turnout in Terry County

In Meadow Dale Wylie retained mayoral job with 32 votes while Melvin West won a council seat with 30 and Lonnie Dalton 23. Incumbent Larry Williams lost with 11. MISD trustees Perez 52 and Jordan 45 re-elected. Wellman incumbents Cunningham Kelly Parker won places 1 3 5 with 16 17 15 votes. WISD incumbents Burris 22 and Dill 21 re-elected. Union Independent trustee race unopposed with newcomer Eddie Rodriguez taking Steve Furlow’s seat. write-in Kermitt Shults kept chair. 18 voters turned out.

TEC Implements Computer Job Matching System at Local office

The Texas Employment Commission local office has adopted a computer job matching system. It compares applicant qualifications with employer job orders, scoring and ranking matches for contact by TEC staff. Terry County unemployment is 6.7 percent in March with 352 unemployed and 4,878 employed. surrounding counties list rates from 3.9 to 5.1 percent, state rate 5.7 percent.

Simpson Muniz to serve BISD

In Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District trustee election on Saturday, newcomer Bob Simpson led with 255 votes, replacing Brenda Rudd who had 190. Enedina Muniz kept her seat with 209 votes, both winners at large. Swearing in set for May 21 at the next board meeting.
