Brownfield News Highlights Academic Awards and Local Ventures

Brownfield students received awards at South Plains Colleges Awards Day on April 27. Fredrick Jackson won the English Freshman English Award, Rose Marie Tubb earned the Emma Roettig English Award, and Kathie Barton showed strong academic performance without a specific departmental tie. Glendolyn Flache of Brownfield earned a dietetic internship at the Institute of Food Research and Services in University Park, Pa. Karl Jones and Herschel Lowe announce the grand opening of Jones & Lowe Agency at 420 West Main, with insurance, farm loans, and real estate services. Refreshments offered to celebrate the move from 408 West Broadway.

Caution To Area Cyclists From Officials In Texa s

Police caution area cyclists as warm days invite outdoor riding. Officials stress safety rules, licensing and responsibility for riders, noting dusk visibility challenges for motorcycles and mini bikes. The law allows 14 to 16 year olds to obtain a restricted license for motorized bikes under five horsepower.

Mullins and Johnson Face Runoff for Commissioner Seat

In a Brownfield primaries showdown Mullins 205 trailed Johnson 393 for Precinct 2 commissioner. Henson 162 Green 169 Robsion 20, with Robsion set to face runoff winner. Statewide results show Yarborough 692 and Bentsen 1 345 in Democratic Senate race. Runoff set for June 6.

Jones Lowe Agency Opens New Brownfield Office

The Jones Lowe Agency moves to Main and Fifth Streets in Brownfield with a luxurious new interior and expanded services. Partners Earl Jones and Archie Copeland lead the firm joined by Lowe, offering farm loans real estate policies with 12 major stock companies and crop insurance. An IBM Accounting Service backs quick billing as Barbara Willis and Sharon Merrifield greet clients. Official open house runs 9 to 5 Friday with refreshments.

Advisory Board Formed for Brownfield Mentally Retarded Children Class

Bobby White of the Lubbock State School spoke to new members of the Brownfield Satellite class advisory board at the First United Methodist Church. The board includes chairwoman Mrs. Jake Geron and treasurer Rev. Frank Brooks among others. The school has operated since June 1968 with teacher Mrs. Allen Williams and six students. community must fund equipment and supplies, a bake sale is planned to raise funds.

Mrs. Martins Funeral Today

Mrs. W. E. Martin of 1102 E. Ripley died at 5 a.m. Tuesday May 5 after an apparent heart attack. Funeral arrangements are announced for today with services planned at the local church.

Chamber Honors Promising Terry County Ventures

The Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture meeting spotlighted new industries. Darla Wise unveiled Wise's Barber Shop at 418 E Main and Sammy Jones outlined remodeling of the Regal Theatre into a twin cinema with separate lobbies and facilities.

Terry County Republican Convention Scheduled

The Terry County Republican Convention will be held at 7 p m May 9 in Brownfield City Hall. Delegates and alternates to the state convention in Ft Worth in September will be elected. The executive committee for two years includes James W Evans chair and Janelle Evans vice chair.

Jones Named BAIA Proxy

Earl Jones was elected president of the Brownfield Association of Insurance Agents at a meeting in the Chamber of Commerce Building. Perry Bear was named vice president and treasurer while Alton Nicholson became secretary. The association includes five agencies: Robert Noble Company Akers Agency Turner Bear Agency Jones Lowe Agency and Nicholson Agency.

Film Shown To Kiwanians At Brownfield Club Lunch

A Brownfield Kiwanis Club meeting at Farmers Inn featured a film titled 1968 Southwest Conference Highlights presented by Woody Swaringen. During the session Johnny Willis led a nominating committee for the 1970 71 officer slate with Melton Stewart as chairman and Tommy Johnson and Don Burda as members. T. A. Wartes and Bud Cotham acted in the program.
