The NEWS hosts a census bet with two $50 savings bonds as prizes. 113 entrants remain eligible as the 18th Decennial Census begins nationwide with winners announced May 8 for Brownfield and Terry. guesses cover city and county totals.
The Spotlight notes residents must answer all census questions truthfully by mail under federal law. It profiles Eu nice Rattan directing 18 field workers and hints at May 8 head counts for Brownfield and Terry. Also mentions pancake day, Safety Patrol, Cuba tourism ads, and a rising tourist spend. Revenue bonds pass, trustees and city offices to be elected. SPOTLIGHT Page 5.
Brownfield voters approved a 680000 revenue bond issue by 189 to 41 in a city hall vote. Funds will buy a Nordberg diesel engine and cover cooling tower switchgear and installation for the Municipal Power and Light Plant. The election also names a mayor and two councilmen.
A two month summer program for pre school children who do not speak English will start this year in Brownfield. The free sessions run 8 to 11 a m each weekday from June 6 through August 5 with no class July 4. About 90 eligible youngsters will take part in the nine week course teaching 400 basic words and oral communication. Delwin Webb, Brownfield curriculum coordinator, said three teachers are employed and more will be added if needed.
Reverend Boyd Pearce and family of Brownfield serve in East Africa with the Baptist Mission of East Africa under the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board. The letter describes life in Mombasa Kenya, their children Sheri and Dirk, and experiences adapting to a British school and local culture.
Wellman High School announces its 1960 class play by juniors to be staged Friday at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Brownfield Counsel 825 United Commercial Travelers of America elected officers for 1960 61 Monday night. Named were Crate Snider senior counselor Billy Moore junior counselor Craig Wilkerson secretary treasurer L G Moore conductor Harlan Mason page Dan L Brookshire sentinel and E C Pool chaplain. Executive committee includes R J Clements L G Smith Buddy Gillham and Jack Bailey. Immediate past senior counselor is Morell Ratliff. Meeting scheduled for March.
Voters in Union Wellman Meadow and Brownfield independent districts will elect trustees this Saturday. Meadow lists seven candidates with one polling site in the high school gym. Wellman and Brownfield feature incumbents and a few challengers. Brownfield voting runs 8 am to 7 pm at the courthouse office with several non-expiring trustees noted.
G L George of 1005 East Harris Brownfield is recovering in Terry County Hospital after a power saw kickback severed arteries nerves and ligaments in his right arm Saturday morning. Effie Knox Cooper of 714 North Atkins has a nature poem The Frog Family accepted for a fifth and sixth grade textbook with illustrations by Capt Walter D Burnett formerly of Brownfield now in Kansas City. Burnett also painted a Chiang Kai Shek portrait earned while stationed in Formosa.
Donald Gene Blake the son of Mr and Mrs Howard Blake of 201 East Main departed March 23 for the U S Naval Training Base in San Diego California where he will undergo nine weeks of basic training.
Brownfield Jaycees and Lions announce an interclub basketball game set for Tuesday in the high school gym. Lions president Paul Farrar and Jaycee president Eddie Courtney promise a top talent lineup and a night of laughs with 25 cent admission.
