Fire destroys Primm Drug Store in Brownfield

The Primm Drug Store was gutted by fire in Brownfield early Sunday with $80,000 in damages. Police suspect arson to cover a burglary, citing missing jewelry worth about $5,000, $200 in silver, and an opium bottle. Firefighters battled the blaze in bitter cold, aided by 28 volunteers.

Choir sweepstakes won by four South Plains high schools

Morton Slaton Littlefield and Plainview high school choirs captured sweepstakes at the Region 1 University Interscholastic League vocal music festival. Despite fierce winds and mixed weather, over 1,290 students and teachers from 19 South Plains schools attended, with each sweepstakes winner earning a silver plaque for first place in both concert and sight singing.

Cotton Week Set With Ferry County Carnival Plans

The Ferry County Chamber of Commerce approved a two day National Cotton Week program for May 17 and 18. Events include parades, carnival booths, a maid of cotton coronation, prince and princess of cotton, and a duchess and matron of cotton with ages noted.

Brownfield Considers Conventions Amid New Facilities

Brownfield leaders discuss attracting conventions leveraging new hotels eateries and the high school auditorium. Possible District 183 Rotary session next year proposed along with April PTA and FRA conventions in town. A steering committee and potential self sustaining plan for upcoming events are outlined with a public meeting Friday at 7 pm.

Three City Officials Up For Election April 6

Brownfield voters will select three city council members and a U S senator on April 6. Incumbents Virgie Travis Troy Noel and Sam Murphy seek re election, with 23 senatorial candidates listed for the county ballots. Also on the ballot are trustees for Brownfield Wellman Meadow and Union schools.

Mrs Lydia Lynns Services Held In Plains Methodist

Funeral services for Lydia Lynn were held at Plains Methodist Church with the Rev. Harmon Meixner officiating. Burial followed at Plains Cemetery. Mrs. Lynn died March 21 after a prolonged illness. She was a native of Harrison County and had lived in Plains. Survivors include three daughters, four grandchildren, one great grandchild, and four great great grandchildren.

County Committee to Review Medical Needs for Terry County

A seven member panel appointed by Terry County Commissioners will study whether more doctors and hospital facilities are needed. Members are Henry Chisholm Robert Beasley Marvin McNutt George O Nea l Curtis Sterling C E Ross and L D Hammer. They will report soon after consulting Brownfield Chamber directors O Neal Sterling and Morgan Copeland. The county is at the constitutional tax limit of 80 cents per 100 valuation and needs higher property values to raise funds.

Wellman Officials Resign From School System

Wellman school board accepted the resignations of Superintendent J. T. Bryant and Head Coach T. Rip Sewell. Bryant, with the district since 1948, plans to establish a permanent residence in a college town. Sewell since 1952, will leave to pursue advancement in the teaching profession. Bryant’s contract ends August 1. Both cited the district’s spirit, salary and operation as excellent but said family reasons require seeking progress elsewhere.
