Firemen Respond To Early Morning Calls

Brownfield volunteers faced multiple fires over four days starting with a mattress fire on E. Tate. A total loss blaze at The Other Place Club near the cotton compress was investigated as arson possible. Subsequent incidents included a trash fire on Howell Street a butane pickup explosion injuring a man near Needmore Gun, a trash fire at an abandoned house on Fifth Street, a car fire at Ballard and Oak, and a couch fire on Second Street with no serious injuries.

Alert Warning System To Aid Brownfield Merchants

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce will launch an Alert Warning System for merchants to detect stolen checks counterfeit money or shoplifting. The relay plan starts with a business notifying the Chamber which passes warnings along the list to sequentially inform all members.

Pesticide Training Meeting Scheduled In Terry County

A pesticide training meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday March 29 in the Terry County Courthouse District Courtroom. Jim Foy notes the training is required under the Texas Pesticide Control Act for private applicators. Self‑study options are available at the county Extension office with a questionnaire to the Texas Department of Agriculture. The October 1977 full federal act implementation requires certified applicators to use restricted‑use pesticides.

Brownfield City Accepts Bids for Water, Streets, and Seal Coat

The Brownfield City Council approved two bids totaling 262 000 for water and sewer upgrades and street paving and seal coating in the Ross to Ripley area and two new housing additions Carter and Flache. Hodgson Construction Co. bid 57 833.60 for water line replacements and new service lines. W D Turner Construction Co. bid 204 166.70 for paving and seal coat. Funding includes 149 000 Community Development Block Grant and developer contributions. The meeting also reviewed dilapidated house removals and approved a workers compensation insurance plan, with Tommy Hicks as voting delegate to the South Plains Assn of Governments General Assembly.

Brownfield Schools Offer Half Day Kindergarten

Brownfield Public Schools announce a half day kindergarten option for students with language and background factors. Full day slots available for those needing extra support with planning for 1977 78, pre-registration starts Monday April 11 at the School Administration Building or by phone, birth certificates and immunization records not required for preregistration.
