Seven candidates seek six or seven seats on the Terry Memorial Hospital District board to guide policy as an $800000 bond election nears. Incumbents and challengers discuss hospital needs and finance while residents prepare to vote on April 1.
Brownfield marks Paint-Up Clean-Up Week from April 17 to 29 at Community Development Committee sessions chaired by Frank Gorton. Ray Anderson leads alley cleanup with Sammy Jones and Jackie Cargill. Jimmy Billings heads vacant lots cleanup with Tommy Hamilton and Nolan Cornett as aides.
Glenn Reed announces State Representative Jesse T. George to the Texas Jaycees State Constitutional Revision Committee. George serves on the Constitutional Amendments Committee and has held Jaycees leadership roles including Outstanding Director of Area I in 1966 and Morton Jaycees founder.
The Cub’s Den at Brownfield High School earned a Distinguished Merit in Journalism, the top school newspaper honor. Max Haddick of UT, with staff judges, noted the paper’s Division Two AAA placement and longtime success, with Kirby Pugh, Ann Wheeler, and Diane Gould in key roles.
Brownfield Scottish Rite Association held Maundy Thursday services led by C K Kendrick 33rd degree Mason. The gathering traced Tom May as an early active organizer and noted growth to about 180 members with guidance from figures including Temple Houston Marrow. Rose lecture given by Albert McDowell and Fred R Smith performed with Newell Reed. Extinguishment of Lights featured several members.
Terry County Legislative Community Council will meet at 7 30 p m in the director s room at the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Building State Representative Jesse T will attend to discuss legislative matters Three topics tax program safety program and teacher raise will be reviewed by three member panels with the legislation present for discussion and questions
A Brownfield NEWS and Radio Station K KUB panel will broadcast at 7 15 a m Tuesday and Thursday about the proposed 800 000 hospital bond. Moderators are Bill Campoe and Bob Sewell with panelists Punch Nelson Dr Morris Knox L J Richardson Mrs Joe Henson and Dr Robert Burns. Additional members to be named Monday. Public questions will be taken by the station and answered by supporters and opponents of the bond.
Mrs. Leonard T. McCallister of Wellman backs the hospital bond after surviving a severe heart attack on March 16. She credits rapid treatment at a local hospital and says travel to Lubbock would have been fatal. Her husband works at a carbon black plant. they have three children.
