Brownfield High School varsity tennis squad extended their season to 30 wins, five losses and two ties by capturing first place at the Brownfield Spring Invitational Tennis Tourney and finishing second in the Lubbock Invitational.
Terry County ASCS Director Danny Decker announced figures for the 1983 Acreage Reduction and Payment-In-Kind programs. Signups covered 1,449 of 1,484 farms as of March 11 bids opened Friday. Cotton base enrollment nears 373,827 acres with 39,252 enrolled in ARC and 333,487 in PIK. no whole base bids were accepted for cotton due to high PIK participation.
Brownfield Independent School District trustees approved contracts for 192 teachers and administrators for the 1983-84 school year. Enrollment stood at 2,618 as of March 9, down 57 from last year, with figures by campus including Brownfield High 596 Middle 617 Intermediate 427 Colonial Heights 523 Oak Grove 378 Head Start 39 and migrant 38. Pinson reported enrollment had peaked for the year.
Terry County Judge Herbert Chesshir resubmitted an emergency loan designation to the U S Department of Agriculture after severe last summer damaged county crops. Acting for the County Emergency Committee he asked the Division of Emergency Management in Austin to make Terry producers eligible for eight percent USDA Farm Service Agency loans. The report later in January did not include Terry among eligible counties, despite local farmers likely needing aid.
The two night event starts Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Brownfield Middle School Auditorium with 26 acts across four divisions. Vernon Paul and Lynn Thames emcee. Tickets are 2 for adults and 1 for students. Proceeds fund savings bond prizes and a cake sale.
Gayle Williams 25 and Willie Nolan face aggravated assault charges with deadly weapons after incidents at Williams home and the 400 Club. Katherine Gibson hospitalized in critical condition at Lubbock General. Willie Hopkins in serious condition at Brownfield Regional Medical Center. Bonds set by Justice of the Peace Carolyn Proctor: Williams and Nolan at 8000 dollars, Jenkins released on 3500 dollars.
The Brownfield Education Association sponsors a 7:30 p.m. candidate forum in the High School Little Theater. It invites the public to attend and ask questions of those running for school board positions.
