Teen-Age Market in Terry Drives Local Economy

Terry’s growing teen population, 1,986 youths per the 1960 census, spurs a major local market. Studies by the U S Chamber of Commerce and others estimate Terry teens spend about 1.769 million annually on clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and accessories, with yearly costs rising with age from 13 to 19.

Register Car Now Avoid Long Lines

At the courthouse and two substation sites J D Akers reports slow plate registration for 1962 autos. Under 1,850 vehicles already registered in the county, with 6,000 plus expected. deadline is March 31 Saturday afternoon.

Future Farmers honor twelve Terry County winners in two contests

Twelve Future Farmers from Terry County chapters received awards Wednesday night for top results in two contests. Grain sorghum winners in dryland and irrigated five acre divisions included Howard Hurd Jr Gary Bell Danny Carmichael and Larry Blake Terry Sims and John Blake. Cotton contest winners included Bill Schofield Calvin Melcher Larry Willis Ronnie Sullivan and Johnny Knox. Local officials Don Thrash and Winfred Tucker presented cash prizes.

Farm Labor Day Held in 121st District Court

The second farm labor day of the season ran 8:30 am to 3 pm Wednesday in 121st District Court. About 75 applicants visited Terry farms seeking work. 26 Terry farmers attended, 16 farmers placed orders, and 14 men were hired. TC Commission head Joe Spears vowed to continue these Wednesday sessions while worker demand persists.

VFW Officers Named as Hand Post Elects 1962-43 Leaders

Frank Decker of Seagraves died Thursday at Big Spring Veterans Hospital aged 44. Burial at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include widow, three children, mother, sister, and brother. Decker was a WWII veteran, owner of Decker Garage, and VFW member. Hand Bros. Post 6794 elected officers for 1962-43, to be installed April 5, with Bruce Salmon as post commander and others in key roles.

Scouts From Troop 774 Attend Scout-o-Rama in Lubbock

Three youths from Boy Scout Troop 774 joined Scout master Kelly Proctor at Scout-o-Rama in Lubbock last Saturday. The group included Mike Skupin and Bruce Grizzle with addresses on East Cardwell and Phil Willingham, son of Marie Willingham, plus Proctor’s son Johnny. The troop is sponsored by Howard Henson Post 269, The American Legion.

Welfare officials gather for Dallas conference

Burton G Hackney of 1302 East Hester and chairman of the Texas State Board of Public Welfare will join the Southwestern Regional Conference of the American Public Welfare Association in Dallas from today through Wednesday. He will participate in a banquet session on Planning Community Services for Children as more than 1 000 welfare officials from five states attend under the theme The Current Scene in Public Welfare.

Beauchamp completes eight weeks in Army MP training

Former Brownfield police lieutenant Larry Beauchamp has finished eight weeks of MP training at Fort Gordon Georgia after enlisting last October following basic at Fort Carson. He is the son of Mr and Mrs P G Beauchamp Sr of Route 5 and a Rochester High School graduate studying civil and military law, self defense and traffic control at Gordon.

Posse in Lubbock to ride in ABC Rodeo parade

The Lubbock county sheriff posse will join numerous units in the annual ABC Rodeo parade starting at 4 p.m. The parade will open at Mafl Coliseum with the Terry posse in the grand entry. Captain Bill Gordon leads the posse.
