Five year rise of irrigation spurs a fertilizer and chemical surge in Terry County. About 200 workers are employed, with Farm Chemical and Wood Chemical among leading firms expanding from 1953 into 1954 as acreage controls and water supply shape demand.

Funeral rites for Tobe A Power age 2 were held at Asbury Methodist Church in Midland. The Rev. W. G. Burton pastor of O'Donnell Baptist Church will be featured speaker for the First Baptist Church Brotherhood meeting at 7 p.m. Monday. Burton began at O'Donnell last August after three years at Grover and has served as associate pastor at Bowie Perryton and Burne. He studied at Decatur Howard Payne Baptist Colleges and Southwestern Seminary at Fort Worth.
Major R A Crowder of the Texas Department of Public Safety says only 3 200 of 8 800 registered Terry vehicles have passed inspection. The April 15 deadline stands with a 200 fine for noncompliance and no extension. Motorists are urged to complete inspections now to avoid penalties.
Brownfield residents weigh a plan to allow toll free calls between General patrons and Ausborne and Wheatley exchange users. If approved, General adds 10 cents home and 50 cents business monthly. Ausborne and Wheatley face $1.50 per month. The program aims to fund roughly $16,800 and $324,900 in costs. Postal cards are addressed to City Hall at 218 West Main Street.
A 17 year old from Lubbock is jailed in Terry County on burglary charges tied to a Feb 24 break in. Wesley Brewer is held on a 50 dollar bond set by Judge Herb Chesshir. Accomplices Dwayne Milman 17 and George Brock 18 are jailed in Lubbock County. Brock has prior three year sentence for other burglaries. The trio reportedly took four safes and worked about three hours to open them.
Mary Jane Brownfield, Brownfield High School senior and editor of the annual, received the TEWC Outstanding Student award at the District 7 convention in Childress. She has held multiple school and community roles, earning top honors in band and journalism while maintaining an A average.
Committee members were named to organize the June 57 rodeo in the town. Advertising duties went to Ray Christopher Courtney BF Vo Parrett and Kyle Graves. Decorations assigned to Leo Holmes James Tippit and Jack Waller. Contests to Byron Asti wander G1 Ceorpe and Ronnie Cra hamton. Plans include Dutch Dinner and a weather-caused date shift to March 2. The Rev Ralph Bell will lead a series of Sermon on the Mount lectures starting Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church.
Charles Fisher superintendent of Lubbock Experiment Station outlined a near reality off station research program at a Thursday meeting with 14% Terry farmers and local agriculture offices. A 40 acre land plot with 30 irrigated acres is needed to establish dryland and irrigated tests on cotton and other crops over at least five years, potentially ten. Fisher said the project would consolidate past small tests and require farmer partners to follow procedures, noting irrigation choices and other practical hurdles.
