Civic group from Brownfield rallies to back undergraduate pilot training facility at Reese AFB awaiting contract award. County agrees to taxways and tie‑downs for compliance. Local school board races draw five candidates for two seats while city incumbents face no opposition. A fable ending with a moral about prass houses and thrones.
Howard-Henson Post No 269 plans a birthday party at the Legion Hall to mark the 46th anniversary of the American Legion with a full course meal games and fellowship for veterans families and interested guests. Two 15 minute radio broadcasts will be aired on KKUB at 7 30 am and 12 noon.
The Terry County Junior Livestock Show concluded Monday afternoon with the auctioning of animals. Grand Champions included Loyd Jordan in Milk Fed Calf and Grady Herron in Dry Lot Calf, both purchased by Jones-Lowe Agency. Donald Martin led Swine with a Hampshire Grand Champion, while Dana Haywood held the Reserve Spot in Swine. Ken and Corkey Bozeman conducted the sale with buyers such as Goodpasture Grain and Milling and Piggly Wiggly among others. hogs sold for $18.20 per hundred.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Jeff Holland 73 a Terry County pioneer who died at home Monday. The Brownfield Church of God officiated with burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include her husband two sons two daughters a brother four half brothers and three half sisters plus numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Texas Highway Department announces the start of a 10536 mile project on U S 62 from Wellman to Seagraves creating a four lane divided facility. It spans 9.139 miles in Terry County and 1.397 miles in Gaines County with J O Boswell of Lubbock as contractor. Traffic will use the old highway until completion and warning signs and speed zones will be observed.
Twenty six aviation firms bid to train Reese Air Force Base pilot students with Randy C Hill of Brownfield as apparent low bidder at 13 49 per hour for initial flying in a new program. Garland Foshee, Semiole, and Valley Aircraft also bid.
Donors from Meadow Coop Gin to J B Knight Company led the drive for the Terry County Junior Livestock Show with $200 gifts. A wide list includes Western Grains Farm Store $140 Brownfield Co op Gin $125 and many others pledging amounts from $75 to $5 to support the event.
Notification filed for a fifth candidate Roland Pair seeks Place 5 on the Brownfield School Board. Pair, a farmer and California transplant, lives at 1012 E Buckley with Betty, has two children Kenny and Linda, and previously chaired a California apprenticeship committee before returning to farming. He joins incumbent Carrol Collier as the five candidates in the race. Curtis C. Scott Leon Leperd and Dr Tim G Faulkenberry vie for Place 4, currently held by James H. Murdough Jr who is not seeking re election.
Terry County Commissioners moved quickly to support a pilot training facility at the Terry County Airport. An order approved unanimously commits up to 20000 for taxiways and tiedown areas to meet government requirements for the T-41 Undergraduate Pilot Training program at Reese Air Force Base. County Judge R A Simms presided with County Clerk Wade Vandell and all four court members present.
Funeral services for Mrs. F. B. MecBurnett were held at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. Burial followed in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. Mrs. Burnett, 38, died Monday at Brownfield General Hospital after a sudden illness. She came to Terry County in 1920 and married in 1925. her husband died in 1955. Surviving are son E. B. Jr., Alice. daughter Mrs. Ann Hall, Farmington NM. mother Mrs. L. R. Pounds, Brownfield. sister Mrs. Young Myatt, Lubbock. foster brother Tommy Hicks, Brownfield. and six grandchildren.
