Thefts And Vandalism Under Investigation

Brownfield and Terry County law enforcement report ongoing thefts and vandalism. Items stolen include two air conditioners valued at 175 each from Willie Helm’s warehouse on South Cedar. Missing include a 25 gallon butane bottle an oxygen bottle five chain tongs a torch and seven cutting tips. Police also report two bicycle thefts resolved and a battery theft from a county maintainer. Vandalism includes sand in an irrigation engine broken windows at Brownfield High School and a broken 12 by 14 inch window at Bowman Oldsmobile Cadillac Pontiac. An arrest has been made on a Hockley County warrant for theft and a school attendance charge. Police report two drunken arrests and a minor traffic mishap near Island Hill with a damaged 1964 Ford.

Brownfield Council Approves Reduced Rate For Large Electricity Users

The Brownfield City Council approved a new rate for large consumers that keeps charges stable up to 100 000 KWH monthly and lowers rates beyond that. the measure aims to attract industry. The panel also advanced a plan to offer city land for industry sites in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and prepared a water authority conveyance with Canadian River Municipal Water Authority. A budget hearing was set for March 18 with bids sought for pumps pipes and fittings for two new city wells slated to begin April 1.

Lease Sale Finalized in Terry County School Lands

The Terry County Commissioners Court finalized a lease sale at 25 dollars per acre. Wesley Chalfant won the bid for a half section of Terry County School Lands in Gaing County. County Judge R A Simms presided. commissioners E F Red Tankersley H B Dock Sette and R L Bob Burnett were present. Wayne Mullins Jr was absent.

Terry County Junior Livestock Show Enters Second Day

The Terry County Junior Livestock Show moves into its second day at the County Show Barn with weighing and judging of calves and swine yesterday. Tonight features judging of swine at 9 a.m and an animal auction at 2 p.m led by Ken and Corkey Bozeman of Lubbock. Brownfield Jaycees and Terry County Young Farmers sponsor. visitors welcomed 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. with local business firms underwriting the event.

Jury Readers Two Verdicts In County Court

Two liquor violation trials yielded one conviction and one acquittal. Andres Rivera was found guilty and fined 125 dollars plus costs. T. T. Miller was acquitted on the liquor charge. Bond forfeiture for Aliandro Gonzales due to failure to appear. Dennis L. Jordan pled guilty as an accomplice and fined 100 dollars plus costs. Junior Brown trial delayed to March 23.

Union Independent School District sees four candidates for three board seats after Dan Beck joins Ferrell Herring R R McNiel and Lee Miller. Incumbent Miller seeks re election while Almos Neill Harvey Smith leave the board. Absentee voting runs March 8 to March 30 at the Superintendent's Office Union School.

Four candidates seek three seats on the Wellman Independent School District Board of Trustees in the April 3 election. Otis Lee Bass joins Victor Watts and incumbents Carl Golden and Gerald Bevers. Absentee voting runs March 8 to March 30 in the tax collector’s office at Wellman High School. Election Day is in the Board Room at the school.
