Filing Deadlines Pass In Most Area Elections

Filing for area elections closed with six of seven races set by Tuesday and the hospital board contest due Monday. City Council has seven candidates for three two year terms, including Lindsey seeking another term while Sandlin and Pope cannot run again. Union School Board draws four challengers for three at large seats alongside three incumbents. See Elections Page 4A.

Brownfield Council OKs Electric Rate Increase

Brownfield City Council approves a city electric rate hike to offset Southwestern Public Service increases. The base residential first 100 kWh rises to 7.0 cents, next 400 kWh to 6.0 cents, over 500 kWh to 5.0 cents. minimum charge climbs to $7.00. Commercial rates also rise. The measure takes effect April 1 with earlier step in December and a second on May 1. Local SPS costs add about $270,000 yearly.

Reward Offered for Brownfield Gin Burglary Information

Frayes) 300 reward offered by Brownfield Crime Information Inc. for information leading to arrest and indictment of those involved in the burglary of the West Gin office on the night of February 27, 1983. Entry was by prying a door. about 150 dollars in rolled coins, a hand held grinder, and a set of combination wrenches in a green case were stolen. Additional theft from the Reliable Gin office included change from a coke machine and interior damage.

Burglary at Darryl Vandevere Residence Reported

Police investigated a February 27 1983 burglary at the Darryl Vandevere residence. Items taken included a Sylvania portable color TV a Technics stereo receiver and turntable a Technics cassette recorder a Panasonic cassette recorder Sony headphones and Realistic speakers.

Brownfield Schools Invite Open Houses for Public Week

Brownfield residents may visit BISD campuses during Texas Public Schools Week with open houses at Brownfield Middle School and Brownfield Intermediate School Monday 7 to 8 pm, Oak Grove Elementary 7:30 to 8:30 pm Tuesday, and Colonial Heights Elementary 7 to 8 pm Tuesday. Intermediate, Oak Grove, and Colonial Heights also host PTA meetings at 7 pm Monday and 7:30 pm Tuesday respectively. Brownfield High School offers visits by inquiry.
