Local campaign to rid Brownfield of junk and clutter begins today and runs through Saturday. Success hinges on total community cooperation to make the town healthier and tidier.
Sammy Ned Branch, 14, Meadow, is granted a junior membership in the American Angus Association in St. Joseph Missouri. The status lasts until age 21 with potential conversion to lifetime membership. he is among 167 juniors nationwide named last month.
Texas legislator Jesse T. George told Lions Club members the 59th Legislature saw about 1,180 House bills introduced with only about a third passing. He highlighted redistricting changes, water development plans, and upcoming constitutional amendments for voters. He noted district growth from four to five counties and Midland County joining the 19th District. Nicholson announced new Terry County United Fund Directors and an invitation for a Brownfield mid winter conference. A Life Membership Award was presented.
Robert Noble Jr. was installed as president of the Brownfield Optimist Club at a Thursday night dinner at the Party House. Dean Merrifield and Phil Porter became vice-presidents, Pete Lindsey as secretary treasurer, with outgoing president James W Evang honored. Russell Wimberly Zone C lieutenant governor gave the address and led the ceremony. Jackie Cargill gave the invocation. A game night followed the program, with about 20 couples in attendance.
Rev. Alby J. Cockrell recently became pastor of Brownfield First Methodist Church and addressed the Rotary Club Friday. J. O. Gillham and Rev. Jack Garrett introduced the speaker while Charles Paul presented visiting Rotarians including Rev. Douglas Carver, Brownfield’s former football coach from about 40 years ago.
A week long city county cooperation effort led by the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce the City of Brownfield and Terry County launches a city wide cleanup campaign. The drive covers trash weeds junk cars and dilapidated buildings with waivers on large item pickups and free extra service to encourage citizen participation ending Saturday.
Brownfield households show rising electricity use and costs. A FP C report finds 100 kWh bills at 4.75 dollars in Brownfield versus 4.03 nationally. For 250 kWh the local bill is 7.50 dollars, 500 kWh 11.25 dollars, with regional consumption reaching 4833 kWh per household in the year.
The Board of Education sets 7:30 pm Monday in the high school library for its monthly meeting. Key items include the faculty salary schedule and 1965 66 and 1966 pay plans, Senate Bill 4 review, Title VI compliance, budget progress, a public hearing, and 18 personnel actions including 11 resignations and seven new hires. Principal Jim Cherry resigns effective July 15 to become a high school principal in Spearman.
