Terry County Jail expands to house federal inmates
Terry County opens a modern jail and sheriff department facility replacing cramped courthouse quarters. The jail, designed for 156 inmates, houses 86 inmates presently with 48 potential federal prisoners, boosting staff to 18 jailers and adding a cook. Revenue from inmate phones and higher per day federal rates lift finances, while costs rise from $0.80 to $2.35 per meal. Sheriff Johnson notes growth, new services, and cautious future expansion to benefit taxpayers.
