Brownfield News interviews Buzz Steele about diversifying beyond cotton in summer 1998. He explains growing alfalfa for seed instead of hay, a perennial three year crop yielding yearly harvests and soil nitrogen benefits. Steele plans a late August or September seed harvest after a single annual effort. He has contracted with a Tulsa seed company and notes eight to ten area farmers exploring the approach. Steele also grows peanuts as a potential staple crop in his diversification efforts.
In Terry County farmer Steele notes cucumbers as a new crop replacing cotton after storms and boll weevil pressure. He plans June plantings, single cropping behind winter wheat, and a two-step harvest process yielding cucumbers sent to a Colorado shed. Twenty local farmers grow the crop amid weather and thrip challenges.
Brownfield shows record electricity demand with June 2 and June 3 at 18,800 kilowatts, a new high. May 1997 to May 1998 usage rose from 5.568 million to 6.7 million kilowatts, signaling hotter, costlier summer ahead. City official Leon Ammons notes high temps drive higher bills and suggests thermostat controls.
