Mary Jane Blackstock and Donna Steinrath depart Lubbock at 7 30 a.m. Tuesday by charter bus for Austin for the annual Girls State session sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. They are sponsored by Howard Henson Post No 269 Auxiliary and join 17 district 19 girls.
S W Newsom was found dead in his trailer on Sea Graves Highway by his sons and the sheriff department. The death was ruled natural and Newsom had been dead since Friday night. Funeral services are pending.
Through June 13 the city recorded two inches of moisture just under the monthly average, elevating the year’s total to 10.79 inches and 3.16 inches above normal. County-wide rains ranged from two to five inches in various locales, with crop damage reported as 10-15 percent of allocated cotton washed or blown out.
Brownfield Jaycees will donate 350 dollars to the Terry County Little League and 150 dollars to the Summer Recreation Program to aid two local youth initiatives. The announcement came at the regular Brownfield Country Club meeting with guests Bob Smith and James Morris. Dennis McCutcheon spoke in Jack Greenfield’s absence, outlining program needs and upcoming facilities. Registration in Little League is capped at 300 now, with 450 anticipated next season after new parks on South Second Street open. Summer Recreation aims to reach about 500 youths across field events, track, tennis, golf, gym programs, and a Red Cross lifeguard course. The lifeguard course will begin Monday for ages 12 and older who can swim. Benny Lopez reported the White Elephant Sale netted 76.71 dollars, down somewhat from last year.
Congressman George Mahon issued a statement stressing that while a national anti crime bill helps, the focus must be on enforcing existing laws. He criticizes lax penalties, Supreme Court decisions, and calls for firm support from federal, state, and local levels to restore public safety and order.
A state instructor notes Head Start may be called Catch Up as 57 students enroll by Tuesday at South Plains College. The program, financed by the federal government, aims to prepare children for first grade with basic English words, reading, counting, and social skills before September.
The Commissioners Court approved a seven percent salary raise for all elected county officials and employees to take effect July 1. County Judge W. T. McKinney presided as no one appeared to contest the measure. This is the first salary increase since March 1, 1966.
Larry Crabtree, a Brownfield News advertising staffer, is named advertising manager to replace Clarence Cone who resigns effective June 14. Crabtree comes from Lubbock KCAS advertising sales and is a graduate of Andrews High School, attending Texas Tech. Publisher Roy Scudday states Crabtree will oversee all advertising and work with advertisers to meet needs.
Terry County reports $9,423 in April sales of United States Savings Bonds and Freedom Shares. J. O. Gillham, chairman of the county Savings Bonds Committee, says the county has reached 26 percent of its 1968 goal of $120,000.
Funeral services for Mrs. Howard Willie Geneva Swan age 59 were held at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. Burial followed at Brownfield Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home. She died Friday morning after a long illness. She was born February 13 1909 in Paducah and moved to Brownfield in 1916. She married Howard Norris Swan January 30 1927 and lived in Brownfield ever since. Survivors include her husband four sons a daughter her mother and brother and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers listed with honorary pallbearers.
