Roy Scudday, Fort Worth and Sweetwater public relations executive, assumes publisher duties of the Brownfield NEWS starting June 1. Native of Sweetwater, he has 11 years in Fort Worth as a political PR adviser and five years as editor of the Sweetwater Reporter, with prior work at the Houston Chronicle, Victoria Advocate, and Odessa American. He will partner with two other Brownfield NEWS owners, James Ro.
A three hour electrical storm hit Terry County early Saturday causing phone and TV cable outages in Lamesa Tahoka and Seagraves. Lightning damaged cables and two to three inches of rain fell, benefiting crops. Repair crews restored 300 to 400 phones while rainfall totals varied from two inches at Brownfield to three inches in Union community.
The Avalanche Journal notes Lance Roberts, son of Sgt and Mrs A E Roberts, drawing attention on the front page. Ruth promises a summer travel story, while Lance studies at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and travels this season.
Brownfield Civil Defense Director Lewis Simmonds told the Lions Club about nuclear attack and natural disaster readiness. He noted 2,300 public shelter spaces in Terry County, outlined fallout shelter use, tornado procedures, and the danger of calling police during warnings.
Six Terry County boys boarded a chartered bus in Brownfield for the University of Texas session of Boys State sponsored by Howard Henson Post No. 269. About 750 high school seniors will participate in the weeklong program to learn citizenship through do it yourself sessions and party conventions.
Brownfield residents used 81,384,700 gallons of water in May, up 20,080,500 from May 1967. The highest daily usage was 3,701,200 gallons on May 29 and the lowest was 1,475,100 gallons on May 12.
Brownfield city council authorizes M R Smith to present a long range comprehensive plan at the June 20 meeting. The plan aims to guide growth over years, coordinated with the Texas Health Department and federal grants, with work beginning within a year and completion within 12 months.
Thirty cases have been set for county court on the criminal docket when it convenes here at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Trials will start at 1 p.m. with a jury available for cases requiring one at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The schedule includes driving while license suspended, worthless checks, driving while intoxicated, illegal sale of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, carrying prohibited weapon, aggravated assault on a female, speeding, possession of barbiturates, malicious destruction of property, abandonment, aggravated assault, leaving without paying for lodging, and aggravated assault on an officer.
The Brownfield Independent School District Board of Trustees met in called session at Fox's Restaurant at 7 30 a m to discuss Citizens Advisory Committee on School Plant Needs recommendations. Committee chair Tom Adams presented the report to board president Carroll Collier and copies were given to all trustees for further study. Trustees voted to have Herbert Brasher survey the plant needs with Brasher Goyette and Rapier of Lubbock.
An ambulance from Collier Funeral Home driven by Jim Zoth was struck by a locomotive at the Ross Street crossing at 9:25 p.m. Friday. The back of the ambulance was totaled. Zoth and officer David Renfro escaped serious injury, while patient Edbridge Lee McKinnon was admitted for observation. McKinnon left the hospital around 2 a.m. without doctor approval. A separate Friday accident at First and Broadway involved two cars with no injuries. Theft reports and school board planning follow.
