County To Receive Historical Markers

The M. B. Sawyer Ranch House will receive a Texas Historical Building Medallion in a 4:30 p.m. ceremony on Sunday June 14. The house near Brownfield on FM 403 dates to 1902 and has been home to 13 Sawyers across four generations. A second marker will be unveiled at Gomez Cemetery west of Brownfield with inscription noting the 1902 establishment and early Terry County settlers.

Courtroom Remodel Moves Forward in Terry County

Terry County Commissioners met in regular session and accepted bids to install a suspended ceiling in the District Courtroom from Doss and Jones and new lighting from Bielss and Letsinger. They named Dr. A H Daniels as health officer for two years and appointed Mrs. S R Lee to handle welfare merchandise. They granted Texas New Mexico Pipeline Company access under several county roads, moved 3000 dollars to the Library Fund, planned bids for a new half ton pickup, approved tires for the Sheriff’s Unit Three, paid South Plains Association of Government dues, and agreed to cover travel expenses for justice and constable meetings in El Paso June 21-24.

Boys State Opens With Large Crowd

The 30th annual American Legion Boys State began at the University of Texas with 785 Texas high school boys and two from Mexico registering. Six Terry County youths registered and were sponsored by local posts and banks. Counselor J. B. Huckabee arrived to lead the group as citizens were assigned to the Nationalist or Federalist parties and began their precinct, county, and state activities.

Johnson Defeats Mullins in Precinct Two Runoff

John L. Johnson of Meadow defeats incumbent Wayne Mullins for Commissioner of Precinct Two in a Democratic runoff by 59 votes 439 to 380. Johnson led absentee and several boxes but Mullins led at Randall School and North Gin with mixed margins.

Membership Drive Slated by Terry County Chamber of Commerce

The Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will start its annual membership drive with a hamburger supper at 7 30 p m Friday June 12 at the home of W A Leigon president at 1201 East Reppto. Directors and Red Coats will be split into teams and the drive for new members begins Monday June 15. In 1969 the drive added 59 new members, bringing total chamber membership to about 360.

City Slickers to Attend Beautify Texas Council Meet

Mrs Earl Jones Mrs Wayne Rattiseau and Mrs J T Bowman left for Austin to attend the Beautify Texas Council at the Terrace Convention Center. Over 500 from across the state expected. Governor Preston Smith will present the Governor's Awards for Community Achievement to three Texas cities Thursday June 11. Brownfield League of Women City Slickers entered Brownfield. The awards honor cities under 12 000 population and are an annual event.

Miss Cotton Will Be Named Tonight At Terry County Contest

Terry County hosts the first Miss Cotton contest at 8 30 p m in Wellman High School Auditorium with 10 contestants from local high schools. The winner earns 100 and will represent Terry County in the Texas Miss Cotton pageant at the State Fair in Dallas October 9. runner up also receives 100 and is alternate for state.

Boy Injured When Tractor Runs Over Child

Kim Lemon a 10 year old son of Mr and Mrs Joe Lemon Route 1 Meadow was run over by a tractor in his front yard around 1 am Saturday He remained in serious condition Monday at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock The boy was riding a tractor with another youth when a dog jumped from the machine He tried to catch the dog and fell beneath the wheels suffering chest injuries

Rodeo Parade Opens Three Day Terry County Event

The Terry County Sheriff's Posse roping events begin with a 5 p.m. parade featuring visiting Posse units and riding clubs led by Queen Michelle Cummings. Opening night at 8:30 includes trophies for top parade groups and a barbecue for a dollar fifty. The three night rodeo runs through Saturday with dances nightly, proceeds funding Ennis old folks home and Corsicana children’s home.

Four Cases Tried Here In County Court This Week

Four cases heard in County Court this week. Garland D. Moore fined 10 dollars plus 44 dollars costs for theft under 50. Gomez Santiago fined 25 dollars plus 44 dollars costs for using a revoked credit card. Ronald B. Graham fined 25 dollars plus 44 dollars costs and placed on six months probation for driving while license suspended. Emmett Edwin Pendergrass pled guilty to driving while intoxicated and was fined 50 dollars plus 44 dollars costs and placed on 180 days probation.

San Angelo report notes a rising number of male operators in General Telephone switchboard rooms once an all female field. At least 126 male operators exist across the General System, with most college students seeking flexible hours, often night shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Meet Your Nabor Maurice Martin Postal Clerk

Maurice Martin, a longtime United States Post Office clerk since May 1957, has lived in Brownfield since 1939 after moving from Lubbock with his family. Born July 27, 1930 in Lubbock, he is the son of the late Tyler Martin and Ima Lee Key, with brothers Dorsey of McKinney and Clancy of Denver City. The Martin family farmed south of Gomez and Maurice attended Brownfield schools where he played football.
