Deadline Near For Prevented Planting And Beef Registration

The ASCS urges farmers to file prevented planting applications by June 6 1977 for cotton losses through May 31 and notes cotton failed acreage must be appraised before crop destruction. Separately the Terry ASCS office will register beef producers June 6 through June 17 to vote on a beef research and information order with eligibility rules and daily registration lists.

New Residences Lead May Building Permits Decline

May building permits totaled 273795 dollars in costs, down from 300214 dollars in April. Construction costs for the month fell by 26419 dollars, with new residences driving the majority of the activity and shaping the trend for the period.

Brownfield Council Eyes Hotel Motel Tax Ordinance

The Brownfield City Council meets at 8 30 a m to consider approving a four percent hotel motel tax on overnight stays. Permanent residents and 30 day motel occupants are exempt. The measure, supported by the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce, would direct funds to tourism promotion including signs brochures and potential convention centers parks and parking areas.

City Receives 10 Thousand Dollar Sales Tax Rebate

Brownfield earns 10436.02 from the state sales tax rebate as part of the 1 percent tax share. The May total year to date reaches 102134.67 while statewide rebates total 22 million to 867 towns and cities. Bullock notes timing changes inflated the year to date but overall growth remains strong. Houston leads with 4.8 million, Dallas 2.3 million, San Antonio 1.7 million, Fort Worth 924257. Construction activity includes 19 new residential permits totaling 829575 and remodeling adds 132995 for the year.

Terry County 4-H Invitational Horse Show Saturday

The Terry County 4-H Invitational Horse Show and Playday will be held Saturday June 4 at the Sheriff's Posse Arena in Brownfield. Twenty six counties from the South Plains and three from New Mexico were invited with about 80 to 100 participants expected. Halter classes for mares and geldings will be held along with performance events.

Brownfield Youth Injured After Carnival Incident

A Brownfield boy, Marcos Tony Tegerina, was struck by a car near a roadside carnival at Lubbock Road and Ross, suffering a broken left leg. The driver, Maria Morales Mermella, resides at Three Point Trailer Park, and the injured boy was transported to a Brownfield General Hospital then to a Lubbock hospital.

Local Educator Receives Petroleum Institute Fellowship

Henry R. Bloodworth of Brownfield is among five South Plains OIC Area teachers named to attend the 20th Annual Petroleum Institute for Educators at the University of Houston June 6 to 24. Bloodworth, a Brownfield Middle School math teacher, holds a 1964 BS in education from Midwestern University State University.
