The trustees adopted a retirement policy as part of local governance. C. E. Ross, a Terry County civic leader and long-time friend, had last rites conducted Thursday afternoon. He observed his 50th wedding anniversary with Alma on May 20, 1972, and was cherished for his kindness and Rotary invocations.
Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District trustees met in special session led by Dr. Tim Faulkenberry. They adopted retiring member plaques and engraved pen sets, revised policies on six hours of class time and extracurriculars for married students, and added textbooks for Related Math 1. resignations of Byron Rucker Dorthy Rucker and Emma Lewis accepted. New hires include Hal Tunnell as Oak Grove principal, George Riddell band director, Jerry Curry choir director, with Deborah Allen Marion D. Baker Jr. and Don Blackwell also joining staff.
Bruce Zorns leads Texas Bankers Association work program planning with district leaders at Lakeway Inn near Austin from Sunday to Wednesday. The report also notes new hires at Charles Darwin Ford, a funeral attendance by Dale Durham, Father’s Day shopping promo, McMurry College dean’s list names Terri Lynn Frizzell Kirk and Karl Leland Baumgardner, Brownfield golfers in Lamesa tourney led by Auvy McBride, and Tom Zorms selling his home via the classifieds.
Brownfield residents and leaders push a strong showing for the Coaches All American Football Game at Jones Stadium in Lubbock on June 22. Brownfield high varsity cheerleaders will lead yells and Gary Baccus will play for the West squad with OU coach Barry Switzer guiding the defense. Advance tickets are on sale at four local outlets, with district Lions raising funds for Kidney machines and gymnasium work at Girlstown U.S.A. near Whiteface.
Residents of Terry County urged to submit entries for a bicentennial slogan and emblem. The contest ends June 28 with a $50 savings bond prize and requires a combined design themed to the United States bicentennial and Terry County.
Clarence E. Ross a longtime Terry County civic leader and former Brownfield mayor died at 11:30 p.m. May 28 at Brownfield General Hospital after a brief illness. He led car dealerships for Dodge Hudson Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac and Ford before 1961 and founded Ross Irrigation and Supply. Ross served as deacon at First Baptist Church a trustee of Wayland Baptist College and held roles with Brownfield Rotary Bank and Masonic organizations.
A Chamber of Commerce meeting Friday afternoon addressed a critical need for more facilities to care for working mothers' children. Tom Harder of The Gear Works noted summer worsened conditions and loss of valuable staff. The session urged private babysitters or a group facility run by an organization and invited community suggestions.
American Legion sponsored amphitheatre in Coleman Park nears completion with concrete poured for foundation and floor. Inset shows C P Doss finishing concrete while officials Harold Hendricks H B Virgil Crawford and C L Hendricks appear. Completion and dedication tentatively set for July 4 per Crawford.
Dr. Bob Berry, plant pathologist with the Experiment Station and Research Center in Lubbock, will visit Brownfield on June 5 to offer free disease checks for sick plants. County agent Jim Foy urged residents with sick plants, trees, ornamentals, cotton, or sorghum to call 637-4060 and arrange drop off or on-site inspection.
Terry County Friends of the Library will hold its annual book sale June 25 and 26 at Kendrick Memorial Library to raise funds for library improvements. Mrs. Billy Balthrop urges donations, noting storage limits during library expansion. call 637-4270 for pickup.
