Terry County Clerk Wade Yandell reports handling over 600 legal instruments yearly with about 13 300 chattel mortgages and 18 514 title transfer documents since he took office in 1952. Deputy Anne Brooks and Mrs Arline White assist as photostat machines speed recording, reducing staff but not the workload.
Four delegates from Brownfield attend the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary state convention in Houston. Governor Price Daniel delivers the keynote as 4000 Legionnaires gather for parades and sessions. Crawford Bailey Kersh Brownell and others hold posts and committee roles aboard the event.
J. W. Harrell Don Davis and Gerald Chedester powered the Indians to a 3 1 victory over the Braves to clinch the Little League championship. The Yankees threatened late with a 5 1 win over the Giants to close the season. Minor League standings had the Eagles and Oilers tied for first with 7 3 records. See No 2 Page 3.
Brownfield women begin a 10-day handicap tournament at the country club for the Bowman Trophy. Mary Jo Hardy shot 83 to lead championship flight, with Gwen Henderson and Peggy Elliott tied for second at 86. Norma Griffin topped first flight at 94, while Bugs Bailey was runner-up at 102. Velma Parker led the 9-hole flight and Sue Pounds was second.
CAMP WOLTERS Special Army Reserve Captain William W. Glick of Denver City will complete two weeks of active training here on July 28. He is assistant manager of Collins Dry Goods Store in Denver City, having moved from Brownfield where he was also connected with the firm.
The Dodgers toppled the Pirates 19-4 in Friday night Babe Ruth play scoring spree led by Billy Moore with two homers and Doug Mason. The Red Sox edged the Cards 8-7 to tighten second place in the standings.
Don Nichol son of Mr and Mrs A R Nick Nicholson was ordained last week at Abilene First Baptist Church with witnesses including his wife two children and his sister Jan Nicholson The ordination follows his Brownfield High School attendance and two years remaining at Hardin Simmons University before three years of seminary work
A county agents report notes varying rain across the week. Cotton profd and fruiting remained satisfactory in most areas as thrips and fleahoppers were reduced by hard rains, while continuing showers may boost bollworm activity.
The City-County Airport project faces repeated revisions to meet Civil Aeronautics Authority specifications. Chairman Earl Jones says five trips to Fort Worth and long meetings produced final plans adopting a north south and southeast north west runway layout after the initial east west strip failed to meet standards.
Thursday results include Senators 8 Buffs 3 and Braves 8 Red Sox 0. Yankees 5 Giants 1 counts as two games to makeup a rained out Giants game. Friday results show Eagles 11 Cats 10, Giants 7 Cubs 4 and Indians 3 Braves 1.
Cardinals hammered Yankees 17 to 5 while Red Sox defeated Dodgers 11 to 9. Dodgers routed Pirates 19 to 4. Red Sox and Cardinals combined for a 7 run margin in a separate matchup.
Registrations urged for the Terry County Farm Bureau queen contest set for August 30 with emcee Red Melivane of KLLL Lubbock. 4-H club members are asked to attend Rally Day on August 15 and send entry fees. Funeral services for Mrs. T. F. Newsom, 76, Brownfield resident, held at Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R. S. Respess officiating.
